All right slingy experts, what are we looking at here ?

I'm no Slingerland expert, but it looks like early 90's Slingerland? . I also think he may have made a mistake with the kick drum saying that it's a 20", when there is 10 lugs ? Were these cheapo end of the line Slingerland, or decent, last attempt at pro quality drums ?

Just curious..

I'm pretty sure that once again these are from Hohner period, like the other kit you posted, thus not made by Slingerland per se.http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_drumsets_1992.htm

The broken tom arm is a testament to it's quality. Sorry if I come across as negative. I would prefer to be my usual "enabler".

There is a lot of misinformation regarding the spirit line. The drums you have pictured are Niles badge, which are 3 ply, no re rings and a 45 degree cut. Those shells were in fact made by Slingerland. They are left over 3 ply Niles shells without re rings, often confused with the import spirits. Included in the spirit line are 6 and 9 ply mahogany kits, same pearl style mounting system etc. I recently had a set similar to this but a bit earlier, I can confirm that they were 3 ply, Niles badge with a s/n. There are also black interior versions which are 3 ply. Mahogany versions are obvious, the shells look like any other import 6 or 9 ply mahogany shell with a 45 degree cut. Look at the interiors of those drums, clearly not mahogany. The other giveaway, 10 lugs on the bd. Reference the catalogue, 8 lug bd, 9 ply mahogany, 80's version was 6 ply mahogany, those are the ones to avoid. The 3 ply versions are actually a great bargain, sound decent, all the confusion regarding the spirits continues to keep the prices low.

Thanks for the info, very informative. I knew that a ten lug bass drum usually indicates higher end drums, but not always the case, which is why i asked. I guess it's a decent price, but i'm not in the market for a Slingerland, or any kit for that matter. Was just curious ;)

You should reconsider. I owned a set of those, and one of the best sets I've *ever* owned in 47 years of drumming. 3 ply shells, really warm and easy to tune. I'd buy mine back in an instant.
