AGATE v.s. ONYX Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I'm trying to determine whether an individual would be able to notice any difference between a vintage Rogers Blue Onyx wrap and a vintage Slingerland Blue Agate wrap if viewed directly next to eachother? If so, in what way?

Also, I'm aware that The Precision Drum Company offers several "onyx" wraps. I believe that they're a "reasonably" close match to the Rogers' onyx wraps. Would you agree? Would they also be close matches to the Slingerland agate wraps?

I've asked the above questions because I've been considering having a snare drum wrapped to match the original Blue Agate wrap on a vintage Slingerland kit I've recently purchased. If I can find a relatively close match I'd probably go that route. However, if the currently offered wraps are significantly off (visually) from the original wrap on the kit I'll more than likely go with a COB Krupa Sound King snare.

As usual, thanks in advance for your time and your help!

I can't remember the name of the thread but mcjnic had a red onyx match up pretty good from somewhere, I am sure he will chime in!

Couldn't sleep. Yes. Precision did a very nice job. I sent the drums to them and they matched 'em dead on. Amazing just how close they got. The other factors involved in that deal were not so good, but the match and some of the work was just this side of astounding. The pic attached is of two drums sent back. One is original wrap. The other is a rewrap. Can you spot the imposture?

As far as the diff between Slingy and Rogers rock finishes...I'm at a loss. I think the Slingy was a bit more tight and subdued, but I'm speaking out of the side of my mouth. I've never seen them side by side in person and can only speculate. So, I'm definitely not the authority on this one.

mcjnic: If there's a "prize" involved, I guess the "imposter" is on the left? How did I do (lol!)?Excited

I'm in total agreement with you that Precision's Red Onyx is extremely close to the original Rogers' Red Onyx. I had them re-wrap a Rogers' bass drum for me in that exact wrap and I was amazed at how closely it matched the original wrap on the other pieces of my kit.

I'd really like to find out if Slingerland's Agate wrap is in fact identical to the Rogers' Onyx but I don't know anyone who's got both wraps in the identical color for comparison purposes.

Same here. I've never seen a Slingerland and Rogers agate/onyx next to each other. I have to believe you've uncovered a collectors rarity - someone who owns both. I may seek out a Slingerland red or blue agate tom just for giggles and do a side by side...if I can find one on the cheap.

Slingerland never made a red agate or red onyx.

The Rogers and Slingerland onyx / agate finishes are identical.

Slingerland Blue agate = Rogers Blue onyx

Slingerland Grey agate = Rogers Black onyx

The Slingerland red tiger is very different from the Rogers red onyx.

There are variations of Rogers onyxs over the years...the early B and B stuff was much more dense than the mid '60s and early '70s stuff.

Since I know that Precision Drum's Red Onyx wrap matched my Rogers' Red Onyx extremely well I guess (based on the information you provided above) that it's safe to assume that Precision's Blue Onyx would match my Slingerland Blue Agate very closely. Am I making sense here?
