Advice On Buying '64 Ludwigs Last viewed: 27 minutes ago

I'm new to this side of the site. I spend all my time in the Non-US side...

I have a chance at a 1964 Sky Blue Pearl. I was wondering if $850 is a fair price. All serial numbers in the 12xxx range.

They are 3 ply with baseball bat mufflers. They all have white interiors but are in rough shape inside for some reason, real dirty and chipped up.

There is about 2 inches of bearing edge separation on the floor tom. FT legs not original.

Mounted tom has a good patch of snare rash, but curiously on the top of the tom on the snare side(?) not at the bottom near the snare...

Bass drum hoops have a fair amount of chipping and dings and the inlays are loose or missing in sections. Top of bass has a chip of wrap missing the diameter of a cigarette, exposing the wood beneath.

Fair amount of pitting and some minor rust on hardware.

That's my assessment. My questions are, to the Ludwig gurus, is this a desirable year? Is this a desirable wrap? Is it worth the price in it's current condition?

That's kinda high for that type of condition. The economies' really changed things. Prices being what they are right now, you should get for something cleaner for that money. I recently sold a sbp set, 12/13/16/22, for that kinda money. Clean, nice set, shiney wrap with good chrome......... If you're interested in a *really* pretty set of 12/13/16/22 WMP set of Luddies, drop me a line.

If you are seriously considering them, be sure and check the bottom bearing edges. The dirty interiors raise a flag of concern - the set may very well have spent some time without the bottom heads, as was a common practice during the 70s. I'd agree that the price is a bit high, and would make him a $600 offer, if the aforementioned bearing edges are OK.

If the set included a matching snare, the asking price would reasonable, but still a bit high. In the condition you describe, I'd say 400 - 500.
