Advice on a 1940’s (?) Radio King floor tom

Loading...

I have Slingerland Radio King floor tom (16 x 16) (please see pictures). There is no badge. The drum has WFL brackets and legs mounted on it. My questions are: 1) What year is this drum, 2) Did it start out as a floor tom that was intended to have a cradle to suspend it that was later replaced by the WFL legs (as you can see in the last picture, there are pencil markings on the drum that suggest someone was planning to/did do some work on it), and 3) What is it worth (the wrap is tight, there are no additional holes besides the WFL leg mounts, the WMP wrap has, of course, yellowed)?

I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Most likely meant for a cradle. However, I would measure the hole spacing on those wfl brackets. My slinger lands are 2 1/2 apart. If the wfl is the same, maybe someone just swapped over to those instead. I couldn't tell you value. It's really all over the board. I can say pristine ones go for 300 to 400. You have the wrong legs and hoops, so go from there. I bought one for a little over a 100 that needed a bottom hoop and had the wrong legs. Was also a bit faded.. Good Luck!

Mark Coopers website shows the large beavertail lugs used from 48-54. The Slingerland shell guide here shows the wider re rings as yours has used till 54. Not sure if there's any other tips but hopefully more will chime in for you. ED is right on value wise. I've seen the same thing. I bought my 16" for $100 with no hoops or leg mounts.

Yes, the drum pictured is from the late 40's-early 50's. Leg brackets were first used around 1947 and the WFL brackets most likely line up with the original Slingerland brackets.

On ebay that drum will sell for at least $500.
