70's slingerland Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi this is my first post here on vintage drum forum. i was referred here by a person on the pearl forum who said there is some knowledgable people here.

so i just picked up a 70s slingerland kit serials in the 168000's it has two 22'' kicks 10'' 2x 12'' (different depths) 13'' toms and a 16'' floor tom and a full hardware package.

one of the bass drums has the avante package, and four kick spurs.

the drums appear to be three pile with rewrings.

i plan on keeping this kit and am not at all interested in resale. that being said one is curious as to what this might be worth? and also a proper date, maybe even some info as to who may have played a set like this?

any help and feedback, advice would be appreciated and there must be someone here with a good stash of slingerland parts?

please note i am pretty new to this older drum stuff always been a tama guy.

i will add a couple photos

cheers ya'll

Welcome to the forum, nice aquisition, you will probably like those Slings as a change of pace to you Tamas.

If you are wanting to restore the kit to original condition most expensive part is the BD claws and T rods, assuming you have the tom mounts already, which you can find used on E bay and on some of the vintage forums like this. Sling bd hoops could cost a bit also, but since the kit is black you can probably do them cheaper if you want, find some used hoops spray paint black and put a silver inlay on them.

A lot of times 60's shells would have a date stamp in them,I don't know if they did that in the 70's though.

Try this link to see if you can narrow the age down

As far a value goes Slings bring the least of the American Vintage drums no knock on the drums, just the way it is,but the good thing is that they look like no permanent mods, are three ply,and are standard depths, very desirable on the vintage market if the kit was together with the right mounts and spurs bd hoops etc,I would say they were worth at least 1200.00 for the sling drums, others on here correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for info. The kit actually has every piece of hardware, no extra holes at all. Some things are off like speed king bass drum pedals, spur lock hihat, but all the bass drum and tom positioning hardware is there and functioning well. I am pretty sure have all the original cymbal stands.

The kit didn't come with a original snare either, so i will be in the market for a matching snare....... i have already sourced a couple at a pretty good price.

I think if i have as much fun playing these drums as i do learning a little of the history..... I got it made, I really think i stumbled on to a cool new hobby with the acquisition of this kit..... First maple kit I have ever owned and definitely the oldest by at least twenty years!

Your kit to me looks like an Avante #60N kit. They came with 12/13/14/16 toms and a 22" bass. The reason I'm saying that is in the first pic,the bass drum on the left has 2 tom mounts. The avanti kt had 3 toms mounted on the bass drum. Two of the toms used a double mount, and one used a single mount, hence the two mounts on the bass drum, and three different sized toms.

Respectfully,I would remeasure the toms, and from what I see, they will be 12/13/14 and not 2 12's.The larger of the toms you have there must be a 14,as it has 8 lugs and not 6 like the smaller toms have. The second bass drum must have been a custom order,or added on later.A check of the serial numbers should verify that either way. They also look to be 3 ply with rings, and are great sounding drums, wish they were mine.

Thanks for all the info. I found these when I was working on the road. I had to sndmy girlfriend to look at them for me armed with a drum key and a phone so i could talk her through the inspection. the price was that good!

i was pretty nervous until she sent me all the pics. gotta love supportive partners:) I've learnt tons on this forum all ready and once i get home i will be able to get down to the real nitty gritty!

I was told the dimensions over the phone, so maybe my gal was a little complacent with the measuring tape. so 10 12 13 14 is even better than i originally thought!
