70's black beauties Last viewed: 3 hours ago

i guess i've missed something here: why do 70's and even early 80's black beauty snares command such high prices? They're not two-piece shells like the original, so what's the big deal? how is a 70's black beauty any different than my circa-2000 black beauty?

I don't know,but I once bought a NOS 5-1/2 by 14 engraved with original stand for $250 around 1987...........

it was sitting on the floor of a local music store for a long time, and they wanted it gone!

Sold it.......whats it worth now? $$$$$

It's because they used old-growth brass back in the day and this new stuff just can't cut the mustard, comparitively speaking. Oh yea, I almost forgot all the old drums were assembled by true craftsmenzes and everybody knows that just don't exist any more!

1. almost a 40 yr. hiatus from the 1935-36 engraved Anniversary BBs to the 1970s BBs

2. engraving

3. Ludwig didn't make a ton of the engraved models

4. Standard Models command a higher price than the Super-Sensitive Models

For some reason, 70's Black Beauties have become extremely popular in Japan in the last year. They sell for several thousand dollars over there, engraved or not. A regular, non-engraved 6.5 BB recently went for over 2K on ebay, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if most of the higher bidders were in Japan.

OK...what year did they start reissuing them?

As I said earlier,I bought a NOS engraved Luddy 400 in around 1987.....it had been in the store for a long time, but how long?

I believe they started in '77 or '78. The first ones have no "B" stamp and a little white sticker inside that says "Seamless brass shell". Not sure when the B stamp started.

Wow! That means a BB was in a store for almost 10 years without being sold!

Amazing.......

I grabbed it for $250 with it's Atlas snare stand (hollow tube version).Also,NOS.

I'm not sure if they had it on the floor for all those years,or was in a cabinet, hidden.

I can't even remember what I sold it for.....knowing my markup though,prolly $350-400.

Someone has a $2000 snare now.

I have a question: What's the difference in sound between a 1978 6.5x14 Black Beauty and a 1978 6.5x14 Supraphonic? I'm talking not engraved or anything that would inherently make it more of a showpiece. I'm just talking black vs. chrome. Is there a $500-1000 difference in sound? Enlighten me.
