was looking on ebay and saw this guy http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300534512945&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and was all excited until I noticed the tone control facing the front.

looks like a 12" and 13" four piece toms mounted hollywood style, did this sometimes happen? the description says the serials are very close and the dates are too. also are these the right tone control for 1968?

The 1" knob tone muffler controls are fine for 1968.

And about the knobs facing forward when the tom is in the correct position? Well I don't know what happened at the factory but they seemed to produce them so that the badges faced the player and the knobs faced the audience sometimes. Seems like a really silly mistake but many kits seem to be like that. And other times they put the badge and the muffler control on the same panel. Here is an example of that on a beautiful Jazzette that mlvibes has up on his site at the moment:

The 13 on that kit is a left side tom. Originally, on 6 lug toms, the muffler was 1 panel below the tom mount and the badge 2 panels above the mount, which put the badge and muffler 180 degrees apart. Then sometime in the mid-70's they moved both of them 180 degrees from the mount, with the muffler directly above the badge. That way they could mount on the left or right.

To more directly answer your question, it looks like a factory kit to me. A 13 from a Super Classic was put with a Hollywood.
