Anyone a fan of a 4x14 wood shell snare drum? Would you consider having one in your player's arsenal? Of course, there is the Luddy Downbeat as well as some other modern companies that make 4x14 wood snares...

I recently picked up an early 70's Slingerland 4x14 Buddy Rich snare and I like it a lot. It is the only piccolo drum I've ever liked. Great little drum, just not as versatile as a 5x14.

Sounds like a cool drum. I agree though, wouldn't be as versatile as the deeper dish.

I own a bunch of piccolo snares. They're fun, especially for low-volume gigs.

I have a 1966 Downbeat snare. I love the design of it...NOT a fan of playing it. It responds very "hard". It does produce a very tight, crisp sound....but I'm not a fan of the feel. I could LOOK at it all day, though -beautiful, "cool"-looking snare drum!

Seems like it would be nice for funky backbeats though...but a one trick pony.

That sounds like an issue with the head. Tried a single-ply? A FiberSkyn? A Renaissance?
