'30s Broadkaster?
Hey Gary,
Thanks so much for all the info. Actually, if I can work the deal I'll be hanging on to it as long as I can still play, so hopefully we're talking several years from now.
It has a RB as shown below.
That does look like the exact same strainer in the catalogs and your pics, at least to my untrained eyes. Interesting that Gretsch (and Rogers) wouldn't use their own parts, especially the throw being such an integral part of the drum. I don't mind that it's a Carlton strainer, as long as it's original to the drum.
My friend and I still have the problem of knowing how much the drum is worth to do a proper trade.
Thanks again for being so kind and helpful.
Best
Stephen
You are very welcome. May you use it in fine health for many years. I like them too so I had to ask...glad the info helps. Found the Carlton mid 30s pics. There were some later chrome Gretsch with the same that weren't stamped made in England on the back. It was a subtle difference like the tension screw adjustment being slim or phat different on this copy from the Sliger one. Also the width of that bottom slide width differs. The 2pt. Leedy look a-like confuses folk as well. Same deal as this 3pt in this 30s era. On all the Rogers I've handled from that era, which continued with certain other makers parts, the faint stamp was there for years and I never knew it. If you get it curious if it is stamped. Looks complete with calf. Nice!
Gary, you're the man!
Now that we've established (I hope) that the throw is authentic to the drum, again, I'd like to pose the question as to the drum's worth, in a trade between good friends.
Anyone?
Best.
Stephen
Well - I'll add to the fact that these drums sound great! I would totally be in the market if you were interested in selling. I played one over at the CT show last year and it was very nice.
That said, I've seen a green (original wrap) broadkaster pull 900 on ebay recently. However, i also just saw (more recently) an incomplete gold sparkle broadkaster end at 125. My guess, is your drum is 350-550 depending on who really wants it.
Play the heck out of that drum!
Thanks Optik. These come up so rarely on ebay and online sellers, I'm surprised that the value is so low. Of course, this is better for me in a trading situation, but at the same time, I don't want to take advantage of my friend. He's into trading, not buying or selling, so I usually find something online that's worth the value of his drums, and we do it like that. In any case, I appreciate you finally giving me a number as a starting point. I love those big drums from the '30s and '40s, and this thing is going to be right up my alley.
Thank you very much, again.
Best.
Stephen

Thanks for the reply. I had already decided to trade him a drum valued higher than the estimates.
