30's - 40's marching/concert kit Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Posted this on another forum which I know has many crossover members, so please forgive me if you've already seen this. Seeing as how this is the VDF, I wouldn't feel right without posting here... :)

I've long wanted to put together a Levon/Fred Young-esque kit of individual marching and/or concert drums thrown together into drum set service. Here's what I came up with:

Snare - 10/1941 Ludwig & Ludwig 7x14

Mounted tom - 06/1938 Ludwig & Ludwig 12x15 (marching snare that came to me with the original gut snares)

Floor tom - 02/1933 Ludwig & Ludwig 12x18 (marching tenor drum that came from Matt at CT Pro Percussion... MATT'S AN AWESOME DUDE!!!!) Fashioned a homemade cradle out of birch plywood and pipe insulation foam. Totally functional but ugly as hell.

Bass drum - 1930's era 14x28 concert drum. Not sure of maker but I've been told Leedy. Rescued from a middle school band room and covered in decades of etched graffiti.

Hope you dig. Last picture shows the cradle.

Very awesome sir. One of these kits is on my to do list.... I just love the old old school look. I think it has stuck with me from my days of watching a little Kentucky Headhunters... Great find on the sizes. Sweet!

Love the kit. One like it is on my "to do" list as well. But what really caught my eye was the bass drum head in the background of pic. 2 with the peacock on it. That's neat as hell. Could you post a better picture of that. I am always looking for old bass drum heads with something painted on them but haven't run across any yet. I think there is somebody here that collects them.

Thanks everybody for the kind words!

Boscoe, that peacock head was hand painted by one of my good friends, Carlos Fierros. He is a MASTER artist. So much talent and he's only in his early 20's. Here's a better shot of the peacock as it looks on a drum. It's a 26" head, so once I get my grubby paws on a proper old ass 26" bass drum, the peacock will be mounted again.
