This is too general of a statement. Calf works better on my very thin 71 Slingerlands. Clear Emperors work better on my 79 Slingerlands with their sharper edges. Ludwig coated Mediums work better on my 68 Slingerlands with the more rounded edges. I love the sound of coated Emperors on all three of these kits.

You really cannot make a sweeping generalization like this. ALL of this is subjective and goodness knows we all have very different ears.

It's possible 2-ply heads sound good because they acousticly approximate the calf that would have originally been on drums, say 1960 or earlier. And many 60's MIJ's are 3-ply with rings, like many old American drums.Understand in NO WAY am I comparing the quality of construction.I believe an MIJ 3 ply luan drum with rerings and an American Duco mahogany/poplar/mahogany drum with rerings with comparable bearing edge contour will produce a similar tone,if they have identical heads.I think the difference will be more a sustain issue rather than tone.

I used to be the Pinstripe guy when it came to drums; however, I am now in love with Evans G2 coated for the tom batters, whether it be on MIJ's or vintage Premiers. I have no clue as to why Pinstripes don't work for me any longer.

Sounds like you prefer the more open sound of the drums now. Pinstripes are dead sounding in comparison to G2's or Emperors....you've expanded your sound pallet! :D

The weirdest thing is that basically, I fell out of love with P/S heads 'cos I had a non-vintage drum kit that sounded dead with an annoying over-ring!!!! What a weird combination. But yes, I definitely prefer a somewhat more open sound these days.
