1983 Rogers Silver Metallic XP8

Loading...

Sunday I purchased an XP8 kit....

Silver Metallic. My thoughts were for the wrap on the floor tom. The price was really good. After the hour and a half drive, my initial thoughts on seeing the set was to turn around and drive home without them. But I bought them. I spent the afternoon stripping them down, and decided to start on the bass drum with some polishing compount...which led to a few hours also Monday, and Tuesday. The drums, the hardware, everything cleaned.

Point is, these are 1983 drums from the original owner purchased in later mid 1983, two of the drums have 122 xxx serial numbers. One of these is before and one is closely after my twin XP10 Dynasonics with consecutive serial numbers. All badges are in the upper 116xxx-122xxx range. Interiors are not lacquered, they were waxed. So, after cleaning, I rewaxed the shells with Carnuba.

I am waiting on some parts. Only got one 22 hoop with the set and it was trashed. Also, missing the hoop on the 12, which I have coming. This was for something else, but I will use it on this set.

Oh, they do not look like the drums I brought home.

As a side note, the tom arms are flat sided, consistent with late XP8 drums, and the amazing thing is that the ratchet posts have only ONE screw mark. The tom arms were parallel with the bass drum since new. Straight out 90 degress from the player. I couldnt believe this, 30 years and the dude never adjusted his tom arms.

One other thing, the 12" drum has the badge in the wrong location. I am thinking this was missdrilled at the factory for the grommet, because no sets of XP8 drums exist in the D100xxx and up range with the badge in the first panel left or right of the mount. The only ones we have seen are in the D96xxxx and possibly early D97xxxx range, from 1979, with the first issue XP8s. And ... we all know, between those six digit numbers in the 97xxxx range and the D100xxx ranges, there was the no serial badges and the RD badges that start about where the D97xxxx badges drop.

The BEFORE pic I took of the Floor Tom bare shell shows the overall condition of all the drums. I also took several AFTER pics of the Floor Tom bare shell showing its condition after cleaning.

In the pics of the lugs, you can see the floor tom mounts before cleaning with the cleaned lugs to show the overall condition of all the hardware. The mounts look like new. On of the tom arms has some significan rust stain, and I will be repainting these with some okie chrome silver spray paint. Same is true with the spur legs which were wrapped in black duct tape that had been on for a number of years.

Also some pics of the set together showing just how good this came out.

There is a chip missing on the 12" tom, which did not have a bottom hoop. If I can find a piece of wrap in this color, I believe I can patch this so that it is not as visible. Also, a pic of the 12 showing the pre 1980 badge location on this post 1980 drum.
