1973 b/o Ludwig sparkle silver, what sizes? Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Now I understand a lot of people do not like KISS, so I'm focusing on the drums.

In 1973 KISS was signed to Casablanca records and received money from the record company, to buy professional gear. Peter Criss is remembered as an early Pearl endorser, but his first KISS set was a Ludwig. (Rumor has it he used Slingerland in the studio) I believe this set is on their first album, as it is noticeably different sounding from the other concert tom sets.

From the looks, seems to be a 12,13,14,15 toms, 16,18 floor toms, 24" bass?

Maybe 10.12,13,14 and a 22" bass?

Would this set have been 3ply, or 6ply? Also the two bigger toms are on snare stands, but the two smaller were on a double Tom stand, I assume for stability. Was this a catalog set, or special order?

Any ideas on this set of drums would be appreciated.

if they were 73 ludwigs. i think they would be 3 ply with clear maple interiors. i don't think the 6 plys with no rerings were out yet.

You're right on the money!

12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 24 is correct.

The 15" seems to be a keystone badge drum, the rest I believe are B/O.

The snare drum is a 5x14" Slingerland. (Sound king?)

12 and 13 toms are fitted with Slingerland set-o-matic brackets and set up on a double set-o-matic floor stand while 14 and 15 are on separate snare stands.

Yes, they are 3-ply. The ones you can see the inside of are clear interior, but logically the 15 would be white interior since its a keystone drum....

Cheers CrashRyder for a great, informative first post, and welcome to VDF! Bowing Most around here seem to show up first with a question about a kit they bought, or want to buy. Refreshing, hope to see you around the forum... unless of course, it's is actually an existing member using an alias, as perhaps he might be slightly embarrassed about knowing so much about Peter Criss' drums... I loved KISS as a kid, and always admired those kits.

CrashRyder, great "investigative" reasoning, and yes, Welcome to the forum!

I can only add a couple of things:

1) What makes it certain that the smallest tom is an 8x12 is the small classic lugs.

2) While your assertion on the 15's interior is generally correct, with Ludwig particularly during transitional periods anything could happen. A couple of years back, I bought a Hollywood Silver Sparkle set that was manufactured in 1969 (based upon the serial numbers). The BD, 8x12, and 9x13 all had clear maple interiors with B/O badges. The 16x16, however, had a keystone badge with a clear interior. The previous (original) owner swore they were purchased as a set.

About a year or so ago I had some black gloss Ludwigs that had obviously been a part of a full set from the mid-70s (again based upon the serial numbers). 2 of them had clear interiors (one of which was a 12x15), the other 3 had the granitone interiors.

Others on here can also relate specific deviations from the norm with Ludwig (and other manufacturers) during transitional periods.

But, other than that I think your observations were right on! Again, Welcome to the forum!
