Wicked thanks V2
1970s S/S Ludwig Thunder Down Under
Thanks mate I already have contact with RCI, I will be making the 26" 18" myself unless an original pops up at a decent price before then...I dont think a 26" S/S is ever gona roll out! Kleening
Vintage that's a cool video. But I don't think thats a stainless kit he is playing. The floor tom possibly. But from what I can tell it looks like a mix of Black concert toms and possibly gold silk? They look to be 3 ply granitone. The Bass drum apears to be a 26" with Mach lugs definately a very cool 70's kit. I have a picture of this kit but I cannot resize it to post it here. I will try to post another one. Great stuff. Keep this thread going!
Can't find any good pictures of that kit. One site said that the black drums were vistalites. Another had a Ludwig ad with him playing a gold mach lug kit. I think the kit in the video maybe some kind of combination of the two. And possibly a ChromeOwood floor tom thrown in for good measure They said he used this kit around 72' I'm not sure if Ludwig was making Stainless Kits that early I think they came out around 76'.
Let's try this one. It's not very good but It clearly shows that he has a mixture of Black, Gold and chrome drums. I also believe that the concert toms look to have granitone interiors.
[QUOTE=vintagemore2000;68354]Dno + other stainless steel freaks, check this out ELP with Carl Palmer on ludwig stainless steel!!! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0FuFfcCZiE[/ame][/ This kit in the video? In the 70s it was known to everyone in the drumming world as the tank. Full kit w/ hardware weight was over 2000 lbs. Real pain for the roadies. All custom built 3/8 & 1/2 inch thick spun alluminum shells. Ringo has been hanging on to it for years because he wants to see it in the rock and roll hall of fame someday.
Dno, here is the web link to Bonzo Drum, Matt Sinyard is the owner and head guy this is the company that did the green sparkle kit, that carl has on his web site! Http://www.bonzodrums.com/
Matt built it for Criss. Criss later sold it to Carl. Its got a plugged up center mount. If you want to see the only other one Matt has ever done, look at the one next to my name. Virgin shelled. It was mine before the Canopus drum company owner wanted it in Japan, so I sold it to him thru feebay. Niether of those kits would float original 70s bass heads. To much glue, not enuff effort.
Carl tells every bit of this and even shows it with detailed pics! and carl has a natural maple, green sparkle, amber vistalite, and stainless steel, with the correct stands, cymbals, pedals timpani, and gong!!
You need to just give Carl a call, or i can have him call you when i see him on the 15th. He's a very cool man and straight shooter. He'll let you know the Green Sparkle is plugged. His Stainless kit used to belong to my friend Rudy before it made its way to Carl. The post on that one was put on off center and Carl had to spend a fortune in welding up the hole, lathe work, polish work, and it has a plate welded inside to keep it together. He did a great job bringing it back. Rudy let it go after buying a perfect "original stainless kit" from our friend Bob which he still has. As for the maple, look a little closer, all 2009 lugs w gaskets, incorrect laquer, waves from sanding in the bass and a keller hi-tom. He's selling it, guess how much? $10,000. to Japan. The Vistalite= perfection original. Stands are correct, but easy to find and own, of course with the exception of the 1402's. The Gong is a 2009. If you own these then you know they are not the same design as the 73' Bonham had. Side note, Johns 73' was a 38" but had no chinese script. Carl waisted a small fortune getting one put on the 2009 38" The one John had with the chinese script was a 30" w/ a paiste and Ludwig script logo stamped in the back. Its the one used on early shows and all recordings. Johns sold here a few months ago for $64,000. Not bad chunk of change! Very, very tough gong to find, but thats the one with my kit i had listed for sale on feebay.

Heres a link with the best video explaining "the tank" not to be confused with tank by ELP, They call this stainless in this production video on the kit and that may be where some of the confusion came from over the years, but roadies who had hands on this kit laughed when i said stainless and they have told me its alluminum. They have no reson to lie, so i have belived them. They said some thick 1/2 inch and some thinner. They, including my pops who worked the road in the 70s but never unloaded it also refers to it as "the tank" and somewhere in my magazines Ringo calling it "the tank" as he's interviewed about buying it from a woman Carl sold it to. http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuk0nSAl7wk or lookup on youtube carl palmer-electric drum kit-1973
