1970's Ludwig Standard Drum Set

Loading...

I am looking into purchasing a 1970's Ludwig Standard drum set from a dude for $350. It looks like a great set, but I don't know anything about the Standard line of Ludwig drums. Does anyone have any info on Standard drums? Does this sound like a good deal? Would this be a good choice among other vintage sets?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Some Ludwig Standards are great drums. They are basically produce the same sound as any other Ludwig drum set because they utilize the same 3-ply shells. $350.00 sounds like a good deal, but no one can really tell without seeing detailed pictures of them first. What does the finish look like? Can you describe them? Are the tom toms single-headed or double headed? Is any of the Standard hardware package included?

Thanks so much for your help! You've answered my questions. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble posting photos, but it seems like it's in great condition. Supposedly it's been sitting in the guys storage for years without being used. I'll be sure to thoroughly check it though to make sure I'm getting a good deal.

It's only a three piece set--probably the 20-12-14. I still figured that was a good deal, even without the snare. The finish seems to be in really good condition. It's a brown metal flake. It also comes with a kick pedal, a cymbal stand (attached to the kick drum), and a mount for the tom. I'll have to change the heads, but I'm fine with that.

Unless you think otherwise based on the information I just gave, I think I'm going to buy it! Once again, thanks so much for your help.

Brown metal flake? Hmmm...Well, off hand, I don't remember a brown metal flake finish option. Without seeing pictures, I cannot say for sure what the collectible value might be. Maybe you could e-mail some photos to the webmaster (David) and he can make the proper adjustments to help you get them posted. Other than that, it's really difficult to venture a guess as to their value. In any case, good luck with what you decide to do!

Ludwig Standards are just great drums....I have been saying this for a long time now.....They are the best kept vintage secret, but its hard to make people understand that they are the same shells as the classics, but with lighter hardware which to me is better than the classic hardware....I have handled and own lots of standards and the hardware does not pit like the classic hardware........I just bought another standard kit and I am cleaning them up as we speak.....All I had to do is wipe the hardware down,no polish or nothing,it just shines.....Please post pictures so we can help you with the color.....The only think I can figure from what you say Brown metal flake is that it might be faded gold mist(gold sparkle) that tends to turn a brownish color......Pictures will help.........Vinny

Okay, I think I finally got this to work:

Brown metal flake is what the seller called it.

WELL worth the $350.00 in my opinion. I still don't recognize that finish, though. All you need now is an Acrolite snare drum and some new/better drumheads and your "set" (pun intended).

I recommend that you use Remo coated Ambassador batter heads and on the bass drum, I recommend a coated coated Emperor batter and an Ambassador front head (unless the original logo head is intact and useable). Use a felt strip to muffle the front head only and then de-tension the batter side jusssst until the wrinkles disappear...front head a little tighter.

You got (or will be getting a very good deal, I think!) Congrats! $350.00 well-spent!!

I own a 1970's Ludwig Standard 4-piece matching set! Mint condition. It's color looks like a tiger stripe/root beer with maybe a little pearl finish to it.

Looks like a finish called Gold Mist. Also looks like a 22" bass.

What is going on with the mounted tom? My gut tells me to look for some water damage just from the odd markings on the head.
