1970's Ludwig Jazzette kit

Loading...

Hi all - first post - I feel kind of awkward asking for help, but here goes. I have a mid 70's kit and I'm trying to find out the approximate value. I've had the kit for 32 years and have used it sparingly and looked after it very well. I bought it off a professional drummer while I am a hobbyist. It is a typical 'catalogue' kit, but the bass drum is 16" deep - unusual I know, but nice and fatter sounding - probably a custom creation at the time? The tom S/N is 117XXX, the floor tom is 108XXX and the bass drum is 108XXX. The finish is mahogany cortex and the shells have the granitone finish inside with the reinforcing rings - the shells have minimal marks, very good condition and cased when not in use. All the hardware is original and has no rust or pitting (dry climate). The snare is an old Rogers that I'd probably keep as well as keeping the old cymbals as I use these with a StarClassic kit that I tend to play.

Great forum and thanks for any assistance that may be offered! Greg

Welcome Greg.

Would you be measuring the depth of the bass drum including the hoops by any chance? The Jazzette bass drum has a 12" deep shell but if you measure it with the hoops it appears 14". There are 14" deep bass drums and if you measure them with the hoops on they would appear 16".

If it were a true Jazzette (12" deep bass) in good condition then $1600 - $1800 without a snare. To get above the $2000 level you usually need to have the matching snare, and/or a highly desirable color like Maple or Burgundy Sparkle. That's based on my price tracking since 2005, although I've only got a sample of 34 sales. If it has the deeper bass drum (either 14" or 16" deep shell) then maybe $200 less. But what you get is what you get on the day. Prices are quite variable.

Zenstat - thanks for the reply and feedback - very helpful! Yes the 18" bass drum is 16" head to head, a bit under 19" outside hoop to outside hoop - unusual for sure. Maybe I should call is Jazzette-like?

Are you sure that you serial numbers are 6 digits and not 7?

Does it have a rail mount for the 12" or a center post? I think I can see part of the center post bracket in the picture.

16" depth is a bit of an oddity for a bass drum in the 3 ply era but not unheard of. It is a standard sized shell for a floor tom so easy enough for Ludwig to build a bass drum out of one of those shells if someone requested it (same shells anyway). The woodgrain cortex wraps first pop up in the '73 catalog (probably put out in late '72) so that helps a bit with a timeline although your serial numbers would seem to put these squarely in the Keystone badge era, around 1965, which is not possible given the other visible details of the set. Another oddity. Any possibility the "professional drummer" you bought them from was a Ludwig endorser? That might explain the odd serials and unusual bass drum size as an endorser would have easier access to specially made setups and also might get "prototype" badges that were out of sequence.

I didn't count the number of Xs at the end of the serial number. Yes the serial numbers are not part of the usual series. I've never heard of 6 digit serial numbers on Blue Olive badges other than those starting 7, 8 and 9. So clearly these aren't your usual numbers. Maybe a photo is in order. It could be that they were blank badges which had "special" serial numbers put on either at the factory or elsewhere.

And I agree with Kevin that it looks like a center post bracket there not a rail mount. I've seen one other 18" bass drum kit with a center post from that era.

Hi - sorry for the confusion on the serial numbers - I think the first 3 digits identify the era, but I didn't pay attention to the number of digits. They are 1174638 tom, 1087153 floor tom, 1083704 bass drum. And yes, the tom mount in a center mount - I've enclosed a picture - thanks!

Yes, looks like the serials are in the '73 range as well.
