1970's custom one-of-a-kind set

Loading...

Back in the early '70's a friend of mine designed a drum set and had it made by a company in Nova Scotia. It's yellow fiberglass, five toms and a kick (the custom pieces; snare is stock). Here is why they are unique: All the toms are long with one head and curve outward at the bottom so that the bottom of each drum points at the audience. My friend got the design idea from the Swiss long, bent horns, the bells of which sit on the ground (think Ricolla ads). All the toms mount on a half-circle chromed bar similar to how electronic drums are now mounted. He said they were so loud they didn't need micing even in amphitheater-sized venues. At any rate, he sold them to a guy who then sold them again. We're curious if anyone has ever seen these drums and if so, where and when.

They sound like North or Staccato drums...... those were projection horns.

Didn't Fibes make "Sound Projectors" back in the 70's? I can remember seeing a Heart vid (among others) with the very same style drums. I also think I remember some copy-cats making them, too (why anyone would, is beyond me). Cool-looking, but.......

Staccato made drums like that, same curve but the opening was shaped a little differently.I thought I had heard that someone was making drums like that again.

I think I got this off of their website? I sent the pic to my nephew because he said his drums needed to be louder. Of course the pricing is ridiculous if I remember correctly.
