Does anyone know if Ludwig used the 3 ply shells in 1970? How do I tell if they are 3 ply?

Thanks again and again!!

That's pretty much all Ludwig used in that year. You can tell the 3ply by the presence of the rings. For that year, if it has rings, it's 3ply.

Here is a pic of the kit I am looking at. It is a project kit. 20" 12" 13" 16". It needs hardware and the floor tom is not Ludwig. What do you think? I am going to look at it in person in the next few hours.

Looks like a gold sparkle Ludwig kit with a supra and a bit of hardware. There are some old cymbals, too. Not sure what you need. Those are Ludwig drums, if that's your question.

I play Slingerland drums and I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to Ludwig drums. I just bought a 65 club date (1st vintage Ludwig) over the weekend and then ran accross this kit. I love 3 ply kits and i wanted to verify if this is a 3 ply. The pic attached shows the inside of the shells. The guy selling these drums only wants $400 but the floor tom is a japanese tom.

ummmmmmm.......... and there you go. I don't have a dog in that fight. If it were me, I'd pass because I'm not looking for hardware, a snare, or just part of a kit. But, that's me. You have your own agenda. Most will say that it's worth the money and you wouldn't lose money. I'm not playing that game, though. Be very aware of those bearing edges. Check them carefully.

Be very aware of those bearing edges. Check them carefully.

To amplify, where toms spend many years with the bottom heads off the bearing edges tended to get pretty beat up. On the other hand, these 3 ply shells are amazingly robust to what look like serious bearing edge problems. Alas you can only tell by assembling the missing hardware and seeing how they tune up.

And as RogerSling also pointed out above...I see old cymbals. Are those included? Depending on what they are they could be worth more than $400 by themselves if they happen to be Istanbul made K Zildjians, or Trans stamp A. Zildjians. And they still might be worth the $400 by themselves if they are nice 1950s A. Zidjians.

The cash is in the cymbals...the devil is in the detail. Only your hairdresser knows for sure.
