1968 Red Onyx Rogers Holiday Model Drum Set

Loading...

Hello fello vintage drum enthusiasts,

this is my first post and am looking forward to joining your community and learning a lot more about the vintage drums I have come to love, play and collect.

I'm hoping that some of you seasoned vintage veterans can help me find out what this thing is worth as I will be putting it on eBay very soon.

First off, the kit configuration is an odd one with (2) 9x13 rack toms, 16x16 floor and a standard 14x22 bass. The first owner said he purchased this configuration brand new in 1968 from a shop in San Francisco.

The wrap finish is a Red Onyx and seems to be in decent shape on the toms. Some scratches and small dings aside all seams are tight with the exception of some cracking on the bottom of the bass drum. The BD hoops have the matching inlays also in decent shape. Is this a rare finish?

All three toms are missing the bottom hoops and tension rods. The bass drum is missing all claws, but has (10) t-rods. There is NO snare included in this kit. All bearing edges are in good clean shape and all the chrome is also in very good condition. No pitting or rust.

A local shop has a four piece with all the stock parts, minus a snare as well, selling for $3000... Not sure if that's a good price or not. But, if the finish is hard to come by, then perhaps their asking price is not out of the question.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This sounds like an interesting kit...I have seen some drums from a similar kit on ebay recently and such for a few hundred each...the floor tom goes for about $450 and rack toms about $300-350 and up but I almost never see the red onyx color. In fact, I haven't seen a set like this in a long time, many years. I have done a little work on Rogers equipment and I am guessing they produced far fewer red kits than blue. I may be wrong there, but it's what I've been told by at least one "expert." I like the idea of matching 13 inch toms... I think the shop you refer to is probably pricing these a little high...condition notwithstanding...I think $2000-$2500 tops is a much fairer retail price...even without a snare...but this unconventional sizing is really intriguing...I wouldn't sweat the missing hoops and claws...they can be replaced fairly easily....sounds like the drums themselves are in good shape...that's the most important thing....that there's no rust really says something about the way you've taken care of them. I hope this is helpful. Rogers drums are really underrated, especially this era. Good luck!

red onyx is a great color! it's also one of the less seen. your kit is incomplete and not ready for prime time. if it WAS complete and spruced up ... i've seen these go for 1200-1700 on ebay this year. yours isn't anywhere close to that, yet. do the work and restore it. great kit! also, post some pics. no telling what yours would go for without the detailed pics.
