1968 Acro find Last viewed: 3 hours ago

About two months ago I found a CL add for a Ludwig drumset for 200.00. Went to go look and found a very beat up MIJ red sparkle drum set along with a MIJ chrome snare and a Ludwig Acrolite. There were also some stands including a Ludwig spur lock hihat stand. A set of cheep Pearl hihats, a Zildian ride and crash. I ended up paying 125.00 for everything. On the way home I thought I had paid too much so I tried to put a price on each peice to make me feel better. This Acrolite has a date stamped 1968 on the inside. I figured the value of it at 50.00. I kept on totaling up the items and by the time I reached 125.00 I had not even got to the drums. So in short it seems like I got a free drum set and a 1968 Ludwig Acrolite for 50.00 Now I am happy with my purchase. Here is a picture of the whole lot of gear and a close up of the Acro. The drums are currently stripped down to the bare Luan shells and are soon to be finished in a copper sparkel finish. I think this was a good deal, do you?

Thank you,

Jeff C

Thanks, do you think the 50 for the drum is an accurate appraisal considering the condition?

Thank you,

Jeff,

I think you are well within the price range with the Acro...

You know what you have there...You wouldn`t have bought the "package" if you didn`t think it was a deal...Plus, you even got a Spur-Lok hi hat stand!!

You did well!!

Cheers

Shoot, $125.00? You stole 'em. Good job! You're going to love that Acrolite. I've got six of them, early sixties to late eighties... All good. I did an old CB 700 in Rustolium (not sure how to spell it) copper metal spray paint. I thought they looked fine n dandy! I'll bet the copper flake will be outstanding!

So you are telling me that the CB-700 kit was painted with Rustolium aresol cans? I would have never guessed that. Some of you guys on this formn are really good with the rattle cans, I dont have much luck with them. I personally spray all of my cabinets myself so I have had many years of practice. The drums however are more difficult to me due to the round shape.

Very nice job on the CB's!!!

Thank you,

Thanks Jeff! I also thought those came out nice... not trying to brag (yes I am) and this is certainly not a situation of the idiot, unschooled doofus (me) attempting to tell the master how to do something, but...

I got that kit cheap because it was a mess. The wrap was cracked, painted in spots... a real mess. I would have passed on it if it didn't come with a bunch of good cymbals and stands. And, all the hardware and rims were there.

It got painted copper since I had a can and a half of it from another, non drum project. Oh yeah, and the paint was and still is available.

I stripped off the wrap, did some very lite sanding, put a primer coat or two of cheap 99 cents a can flat white applied in VERY lite sessions. Then did the same with the metallic copper paint. It took me over a month to paint it, and I think that's why it came out so nice. First, I only painted on sunny days this time last year. Only when the temperature would be over 60 degrees for most of the day. I put the drums on a rolling table and every time I passed the table while doing something else I would shoot it with a few more passes of paint. My wife thought I was nuts!

I didn't fix that kit up to keep. I fund my drum obsession via fixing up old cruddy kits and selling them cheap. This one went to a now 12 year old young lady up in the foothills on her birthday last February. The good thing is that she is taking lessons and her 'guy' buddies are envious of her kit! Her dad called a couple months ago and picked up another cymbal stand for her and told me this.

Anyhow, that's the trick I used. First time I'd ever done it and it was probably beginners luck.

Here's more pictures of the CB kit:

Thanks again for the kind words, and sorry for hijacking your thread! Eye Ball
