1967 Ludwig Acrolite - baseball bat mute too high Last viewed: 1 day ago

I have a 1967 Ludwig snare drum in excellent - close to mint condition except fot the heads of course. They appear to be the original heads and are in great shape.

I took the drum apart and oiled the parts - cleaned it up and put it back together. I noticed the baseball bat mute will not engage - it lifts the head right off the drum when I remove the t-rods. I thought maybe I replaced it wrong - so I took it apart again. It looks like there is only one way to put it together.

Does Ludwig use a different length part where the felt is attached (the plate/arm that turns inside the drum) for different drum shell depths?

This is the only thing I can think of that makes any sense (so far) because if Ludwig drilled the hole for the mute on my drum it would be in the bulge area the Actcrolite and Supra shells have mid-shell.

Anyone else run into this?

i have run into this with disassembly and assembly. you may have your bat lever in the wrong position when you attach the felt arm. it needs to be set so that when you are engaging the muffler, the angled portion of the felt muffler is contacting the head. fool around with it and you'll see what i'm talking about.

i have actually quit taking bat mufflers apart when i detail drums. they can be a pain sometimes. round knobs,no problems there.

Thanks Mike - I took it apart and looked at the felt more closely. One end has a bend in it to allow the felt to slip into place on the head. I learnt something about Ludwig drums today haha.

I noticed when it was installed the proper way the bat was facing the keystone badge. I wonder if that is the simple thing to look for in the future with these bat mutes.

thats exactly what i was talking about. you nailed it.

when i first did this, i too was doing it in a way that engaging the muffler was about to go through head until realized the purpose of the angled/bent end.
