1967 Downbeat

Loading...

Hi all,

As a vintage drum novice I'm sure I've come to the

right place for some help/advice!!!

I have been looking at this kit....

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=121087823050&globalID=EBAY-GB

and in short was wondering if this was priced ok. I realise that

they tend to be more expensive here in the UK but is this too much?

I am not a collector but would want to play the kit so am

not necessarily looking for an investment but obviously don't want to

lose money!

I have emailed the seller and from the serials it is a refurbished 1967 model.

Any info, help or advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks in advance, Alex

Alex,

Considering the exchange rate, they are in the ballpark with this one. A re-wrap will not gain as much as original, but you have to take into consideration that it is close to you, and shipping costs from the US which would be 150-200Euro.

Thanks for that Nevin!

So I reckon that's around $2200 US......what would you think is a reasonable offer for just the 3 drums minus the hat stand and kick pedal?

WAY too much for a rewrap. You could find some downbeat shells and have them wrapped yourself for $1200 US.

Thanks for that guys much appreciated!

I guess I'll do some more research although if I was buying from the US

I'd have to factor in shipping and import tax!.....plus I am officially useless with any kind of tool!!!

Thanks again!

Whilst it'll seem expensive in America it has to be seen in context with the market you're in. Shipping and duties/taxes can be high. I just sent off a small Concertina squeeze box thing to a buyer in England which he paid 800 quid plus shipping for. He's expecting to get stung a further 25% by customs.

If it were me i'd look at something English like a Hayman http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hayman-Vintage-Drumkit-/111043374753?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Drums_Percussions_MJ&hash=item19dab36ea1

Or a Premier http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Premier-202-Oyster-Swirl-1960s-drum-kit-/151023266698?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Drums_Percussions_MJ&hash=item2329b02b8a

Neither of those examples is necesarily a killer deal but they are about a third of the price of the rewrapped Ludwig and every bit as good.

Or something like these

These are a bit different. They look awesome and the snare (Beverley Cosmic 21) is a great copy of a Supraphonic. Plus a complete hardware package, all for about the cost of shipping on a kit from the States. Just a thought.

My laboured point is there are some great English vintage kits that, frankly, look like a steal to us on the other side of the world.

Thanks guys all good suggestions!

I was actually hunting down a Premier kit 20,12,14 for ages. They come up incredibly rarely, (they all seem to come with a 16" FT) and then go for silly(ish) money. I think the last one I saw went for around $1100 US?

Granted much cheaper that the Ludwig though!

I may well pursue the idea of getting individual drums and creating a project for myself.......best not tell the Mrs!!!!Help2
