1966/68 Ludwig Silver Sparkle 4 Piece

Hello -

I have a 4 piece kit I'm *THINKING about selling here or CL. I have a general idea about the value. 13/16/20 came together {340482 Sep 17 1966; 336668 Sep 19 1966; 401103 no date stamp}; snare {618819 Aug 1 1968} purchased separately; clear interior w/ re-rings.

Everything in very fine condition. No fade/darkening to wrap. Lugs/hardware for the most part in very good condition - appears prior owner used abrasive substance on few of the lugs/portion of rims ???

If interested, feel free to PM me. I have sold a few kits/lots of other percussion on ebay & may go that route.

{this is not merely to Bump ...}

If the kind lads of the forum might extend an opinion about the value of the kit in question, I'd appreciate it. I, of course, would like to make a bundle, but am not looking to wrench a premium out of anyone in these parts. As of late, I've sold under the (ebay) table 2 snares & 1 entire Yamaha kit. These have left a bad taste in my mouth since I did not extort, but sold below the mint quality the pieces demanded while receiving, yes, a tidy sum, but little as far as gratitude for selling at a lower price, after the fact. I wasn't looking for a nice bouquet of roses, just a Thanks! man, the snare's awesome, completes my vintage kit blah blah. It's making me not want to be so easy, at least temporarily. It was no one from this forum, that I know.

Stepping off the soapbox ...

I value the kit between $1500 - 2250. Am I nuts? Even though the snare's '68 & the rest '66, it is quite nice with clear interior & re-rings (again, I was told this is not the usual with these; hence a little more collectible ???)

Essentially, I am just trying to get an educated sense of things here before settling on a price. And, yes, I check ebay to see what's what.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to chime in.

Well, since you asked, I think sizes are a bit odd, typically it would be a 13,16,22 or 12,14,20, but maybe it was special ordered with a 20" kick. I saw a Ludwig keystone badge silver sparkle kit on ebay with a 13,16,22 with a bin on the completed listings for $1,100 that did not sell. I would say your kit is around the $1000 to $1200 range because you have a matching snare. You have to remember that the encomy is in the toilet and most people aren't willing to spend as much as they use to.

Thank you JR.

I believe that ALL respectful opinions have a place on the forum. Nearly everyone here {that I've been reading for a while now} is positive and passionate about percussion matters.

A Ludwig silver sparkle JF snare just sold for $585, and though it's on the late side of the 60's it's equally stunning & w/ the clear interior & re-rings. Am I mistaking that late 60's JF snares like mine is more sought after?

Actually, it wouldn't have been a custom order. The Superclassic with a 22 was number 980p. The 20 bass version was number 987p. It's a standard cat kit.

Hi Hobbs,

I think your kit is well worth your asking price. You should sell the kit without the snare drum and sell the snare drum separately. I'm sure you can get at least 500 for the snare alone. Be careful about some people here giving you advice on prices. Put your drumkit up for sale on ebay, make sure that you factor in the fees that you would have to pay ebay. Sell your kit as a 3 piece and sell the snare drum separately. Try to list the snare drum after your drumkit is sold.

Good Luck !!!!

You have a great looking set.

Appreciate the comments fellas -

I've sold a bunch of snares, various pieces, a sweet '40's WFL WMP kit to Sweden & have had a lot of very annoying interactions especially w/ ebay blokes contacting me about selling w/ever primo item I have listed for a slap in the face. What I like about certain interactions here is that there SEEMS to be a spirit of interaction & looking out for one another when bad advice is offered.

I'm most curious about the '68 JF snare w/ the clear interior & re-rings being at a premium over other JF snares.

In response to the clear innerd snare

While everyone has an opinion .... I believe quite a few Luddy fans favor the clear innerds of the late 60s to 70s shells. Absolutely wonderful layups. The Ludwig Lump was gone and the shells were nice and round and clean with sweet sharper edges. Just a slick shell.
