1965 Slingerland Krupa outfit without tilt cymbal holder?

Hello!

Quick question for the Slingerland experts:

Is there any good reason why a 1965 Gene Krupa 1N outfit with rail consolette would NOT have the traditional tilt cymbal holder on the bass drum...and not even have holes to show it had been removed? According to the catalogs, the Krupa kits didn't stop featuring the tilt cymbal holder until the end of the 60's at the same time that the set-o-matic hardware showed up. I suppose the original owner could have special ordered the kit without that piece, but what are the odds that someone in 1965 would have done that? Would it be more reasonable to assume that the kit has been re-wrapped or something?

Thanks for any insights.

bdp, are you referring to the kit currently on eBay? I have some other concerns with that one.

Thanks for the info! Yes, Slingerfan, you got it! Please tell me your other concerns. I'm really curious. In fact, I've been curious right along about that kit because there seems to be zero interest in it despite the owner's claim that it is "immaculate" and original, etc. Something just feels off to me and I'm trying to use my limited Slingerland knowledge and limited detective skills to figure it out. The missing tilt cymbal holder was all I could come up with so far.

Overall it looks real nice. The bass drum is a '64 (date stamp and serial) but that's not a deal breaker. I've asked for the snare serial number but have had no response. The lack of cymbal holder is not really a deal breaker either. From pictures it does not appear to be a re-wrap. The most important piece of missing info is whether or not the snare is a 1-ply. The price is still a bit high if it is and even higher if it isn't. Would be nice to see in person. If you are you nearby it's definitely worth a look.

Thanks for those details! When you say the bass drum is a 1964, but that's not a deal breaker, do you mean you think the bass drum is from a different kit? Or do you think the entire kit is probably a 1964? The description claims the whole kit was purchased together. If that's true, and the entire kit is a 1964 instead of 1965, is there anything wrong with that or does it just mean the owner accidentally stated the wrong year?

More info is needed. At least one tom is ink stamped '65. The bass is '64. Late '64 and early '65 could definitely be part of the same kit. What are the months? What about the other tom and snare? Something looks a little odd on the tom interior picture. Are there remnants of a stain?

OK, gotcha. Thanks so much. I'm new to vintage drum shopping and still figuring out what types of details to look at. Take care.

You have a good eye, that kit is worth a serious look. Your observations and questions are valid. As far as what details to look at, that is very subjective. Some guys want every minor detail to be correct, others are happy if the wrap on all the drums is the same. Neither way is right or wrong. You have come to the right place. Lots of good info here and on the VDG and as someone here once wrote about drum/cymbal shopping "Listen with your ears not your eyes".
