1961 Ludwig Cocktail - Lounge drum

Loading...

Here's my latest acquisition . . . a 1961 Ludwig Cocktail Lounge drum (I couldn't find it on VDG but it's listed in the Rob Cook's Ludwig book).

In his book it also shows the unique strainer too. All the hardware is nickel.

It's 24" x 16".

It's red stamped "JAN 16 1961" inside and also has "16-R" written in white chalk(?).

The blue sparkle wrap has an extra seam running around the drum about 4 inches up from the bottom.

To start I will be using it as a 2nd floor tom for my 71 Super Classics. I am thinking about adding lugs and a bottom head & hoop so it could be used like a traditional cocktail drum on it's own as well.

I'm not sure how to replace or improve on the strainer - it doesn't sound like a snare drum when the snares are "on".

Man that is a rare monkey Please don't tamper with it's originality, this will not make a good floor tom due to the length of the shell.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Love cocktail kits! I was eye ballin the one you bought the bay but I have 2 already. You got a pretty smoking deal! Looks great. Fun to play. I actually take this old Gretsch one out to an open mic I host every week. Percussionist flip out every time!

Cool drum. I have a 1968 cocktail drum that has a stenciled date stamp inside as well as a stenciled number that matches the badge serial number. Mine is BDP and it is one piece of wrap and there is a baffle near the top to seperate the snare part from the lower bass drum part. I love mine.

Rims - the date stamp is next to the inside seam which is opposite the chalk.

The snares are just approximately one half of a regular strand of snares that are affixed to the mechanism used for an internal tone control. The cocktail drums with this type of snare design that I've owned, and others that I have played, sound terrible as snare drums. I used a piccolo snare drum suspended from a cymbal stand with the cocktail drum as both bass and tom. I would remove the half strand of snares, and replace it with an internal tone control.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
