1960s Slingerland 4 piece kit questions

Loading...

Hello

I recently purchased a 1960s sparkle gold kit off kijiji ... i believe this is to be a slingerland however the name plate badge is not on the bass drum and the original snare was replaced by a Ludwig i have only seen nameplates on the bass and snare in other pictures ive searched... i dont see any on the toms

Were slingerlands ever cloned by Japanese companies back then?

what is it that gave it away?

Slingerland never had gray interiors for starters. The floor tom and bass drum have lugs on each side of their edges, where the tom has a single lug for both sides. More than likely that mid tom is from another kit.

Rail mount looks imported too. Close-up pics of the lugs, shell, and mounts will tell more.

Rewrapped? Also Slingerland would not of had metal bass drum hoops, most imported drums (MIJ) had metal hoops, most American made drums had wood hoops.

There was a lot of Japanese drums that copied American drums. Pearl was probably one of the big ones.

Try this link for starters.

The bass drum tension rods aren't right for 60's Slingerland and neither are the spurs. The spur mounting hardware also doesnt match 60's Slingerland. Looks like an nice MIJ kit. How does it sound? Good luck find out what it is!

Vintage Slingerland shells would be thin 3-ply shells with solid maple reinforcing rings at the bearing edges. The interiors would either be mahogany (pre-1963) or maple (post-1963). Drums produced in the late 1960s would have a "chocolate milk" colored interior stain.

Your bass drum doesn't appear to be a 3-ply shell, nor does it have reinforcing rings. It has a grey interior, which Slingerland never used. It has metal hoops, which wouldn't be original on a vintage Slingerland kit. The bass claws and t's aren't the right shape. The spurs aren't right, and neither is the consolette. The mounted tom's depth looks too shallow. The toms and snare have triple-flanged hoops with an outward flange instead of Slingerland stick savers.

As for the snare... The pictured snare isn't a Ludwig. Did you receive a different snare?

Did you get the drums, hardware, and cymbals for $500? If so, you still might've done well. At least some of those cymbals look like nice Avedis Zildjians.
