1960's Gretsch Drumset Value

Loading...

I'm looking at a 1960's Gretsch kit. Here's what I know, or at least think I know:

5x14" snare, 8x12" hi-tom, 15x16" floor tom, 14x22" bass

Midnight Blue Pearl I believe

Only serial number I can see is hi-tom #39267

The screws for the lugs inside the shells are round headed

Not sure if it's 3 or 6 ply shells

I'm guessing it's a mid 60's set

Very dirty but not beat

Snare and floor tom appear to be in good shape. Bass drum is missing front tension rods and claws but has tom and cym mounts. Hi tom has a major crack at the wrap seam. Both toms and bass appear to be missing bottom head mufflers.

So my questions are:

What should I pay for it?

Can I re-glue the wrap on the hi-tom, if not will re-wrapping it decrease value?

Are these sizes desirable?

Sorry but I couldn't upload pics. Something about a security token missing?

Thanks in advance for any info!

A 22/12/16 with snare in 6-ply is a very common size (and wrap) for a 1965ish Gretsch RB drum set in the condition you state above: value $1,000.00 to $1,200.00usd max... good luck...

In the condition you described and missing parts, I wouldn't pay anymore than $700. What are they asking?

I somewhat agree. I'm not even there. People are finding Gretsch, Ludwig, etc. and they think it's worth a fortune. Well, sometimes it is! Excellent condition, clean, original, new heads, and all parts present? Yes, you may get "top dollar"(maybe $1000-1200 for this kit). This kit sounds far from that. Yes, cracked wrap decreases the value, and re-wrapping does too!

For the work involved, and parts hunting for the next year+(which you'll pay top dollar for by the way acquiring those parts), I'd be at $500 or less! IF the rest of the kit is in good condition!

Sure, if you want to take on the restoration project, and it looks do-able, go for it! Just don't overpay.

Good Luck and keep us posted.Excited

Thanks for the info guys.... I think he said someone offered him $500 so he's probably going to start there. Honestly I wouldn't spend the time or money unless I made a $1000-$1500 profit, or if I could get them for next to nothing and keep them for myself. If I spend $500+ on another set my wife will kill me!

Apparently the set is 3 ply. I still have not seen them to verify this. Would this change the value? Also, is $12OO max in great condition?

Thanks in advance

I would be surprised if these drums had three ply shells, but would be interested in knowing if they do. It is generally believed that Gretsch was using six ply shells for a few years before they started applying paper labels. The 39267 serial number would have likely been a few years into the use of serial numbers. Take a look at the edge and count the plies to know for sure.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

I've owned two Gretsch kits with 6-ply shells and no paper tags inside. My understanding was that they started the labels and serial numbers in 1963 when insurance companies started requiring serial numbers to process claims. I assume my 6-ply drums without the tags were from between 1959 and '63 or so.

Here are a few images of the kit. Very difficult to see how many ply the bass is. I still have not seen them in person yet.
