1958 Ludwig Buddy Rich Super Classic snare drum worth question Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hello all. I am a classic and vintage drum fan and player. I am writing to get your opinion. I have a relative (guitar player) that recently found a BDP 1958 Super Classic in great shape. He is going to sell it cheap, and I am trying to stop him ha ha. It is s beauty! He got a butt plate and snare wires to complete it, and is about to post on Craigslist. It has the original stand as well. It is completely intact as well. Can I get some input on what amount he should be asking? I have seen them sell from $350-$600. What is the going rate these days?

Last one of these I saw in a store setting was a 1960 one in Blue Sparkle with a transition badge. It was in beautiful condition (dare I say "mint" ?...no I won't, but it was really nice) for sale at my local Guitar Center for $429.

I wanted it, mostly because the date stamp made it almost exactly one year older than myself. I came so close to buying it on several occasions. Finally had a salesman who seemed to know what he was doing and I offered $400 out the door and they wouldn't budge (because "Yeah...The Hollywood store sets the price on all the vintage drums"). Anyway, at that point I wouldn't pay more than $400 on "principle" and that miniscule $30 was just enough to keep me from buying yet another unnecessary snare drum. It sold eventually (I don't know for how much).

So anyhow, that's what "The Hollywood Store" thinks they're worth...$429. Or at least they did a couple years ago.

There's a Blue Sparkle on eBay for $400, hasn't sold yet. BFP Transition badge may bring a bit more, perhaps $450. Cleaned and new heads of course, and the snares either original or excellent replacements, they are like hounds teeth!

Thanks! I was thinking it is easily worth $500 with the right snare wires. I will attach a pic of it after cleaning and polishing. I think it is very close to mint or at least VG. He lives near Sweetwater Sound, so he is going to have them install the snares. I just do not want to see him get ripped off and sell it too cheap.

Quick story: I found a 1964 complete set of Galaxy Sparkle drums at a pawn shop in 2003. I got the four piece set with stands, cymbals and two crashes for $200. I cleaned it all up and loses the drums alone on eBay with a reserve of $1200. They sold within seconds of listing. I made a mistake and could have made more if I set the buy it now price higher.

Anyway, I think he can get a good price for this one!

What type of butt plate did he get? Unless I'm confused (entirely possible) There are two styles that work with this throw. This model snare had just the standard type like you'd have on a Jazz fest, not the one for the individually adjustable snares. They still take a special snare assembly though.

Wow, I wish I'd seen that Galaxy sparkle set. If you don't know what something is worth but can describe it accurately the bidders will figure it out for you, so best to leave the BIN option unavailable...or set it crazy high. But you still made a grand so that's not too shabby.

I found the matching butt plate with the WFL logo for the snare and sent it to him. He's getting wires put on by a pro shop today. I want that snare, and was hoping he would just send it my way ha ha.

I knew I had a good kit, but at the time didn't understand the galaxy wrap was pretty rare. After selling everything, cymbals and hardware, I made $1500 profit. The 15 inch zildjian high hats went for a lot of I recall.
