1949 Ludwig & Ludwig WMP 'Standard' Snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago

So within the next week or so I'll be finding my way to NYC to pick up this gorgeous snare I found on CL today. He wanted less than $500 for it, and is willing to hold it for me. For the age and condition I thought he asked a very fair price. Does anyone know what type of wood was used on this bad boy? I haven't personally gone over it yet, but from what I see It is in fantastic shape. Oh boy Christmas is coming early, lol.

I had the exact snare from 1950 (sans the original strainer) and it was one of the best sounding snares I've ever owned! I believe it is 3-ply mahogany but hard to tell since it was painted white on the inside. I think you did great and will enjoy this snare very much. All of the Conn era stuff was very well-made.

Very nice drum!! I have nearly the same one, mine is a 1941 Ludwig & Ludwig, in the same WMP wrap. White interior with re-rings and the same "three position" snare throw off. If you got it for less than $500, I think you did well.

Thanks Brewkowski! Yea I've seen some of the snares from that era go for a hefty price, but some of them certainly commanded it. I'm happy to have found one in my range that matches the 1938 Ludwig & Ludwig kit I have. I was trying to sell the kit, but I may add it into the collection. I'm certainly never parting with the snare though! And yea the price asked was too good to pass, especially given the condition.

Good deal there! I need to check CL more often. :) Never know the seller may have some other gems stashed away. Congrats it's a beauty.

Here's a few photos of my '41. My daughter helped me strip it down last year and give it a good cleaning. She loves helping me work on drums!

I saw a guy recently out of Houston asking $800 for this exact snare, though I don't believe he ever sold it. It wasn't in as nice condition and honestly, as cool of a drum as it is, I don't see it going for that much..

I have the kit to go with your snare drum. what a lot of people don't realize is these are the very shells Geo way used on his drums.
