1940's Radio King Questions

Loading...

So I picked this snare up yesterday and had some questions on identification and restoration. It's a little rough but I have never owned an RK before and for $300.00 locally I figured it was not a great deal but good enough to add an RK to my stable. I'll start off with the ID questions.

1. What model RK is this? From looking at the catalog I would guess this is an Artist Model Radio King from the mid-40's and I have searched through many threads I.D'ing this same snare as such but in the catalog all the Artist Models I see have the tone control on the first panel to the right of the badge not the strainer.

2. The strainer tension knob is off is this repairable or do I need a replacement? Is this a typical problem of the 3 point strainers?

3. There is bubbling on the BDP wrap which is also badly greening. Anyone ever have any success removing bubbles from wrap or restoring BDP that has turned green ?

Here are some pics:

It is a Hollywood ace model, no that isn't a very common problem with the 3 point strainers. I have only seen it once before on one that I had, a machine shop should be able to reattach it with no problem.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I read somewhere, either in the official slingerland pages on this forum or mark coopers slingerland page, that during a certain time in the 40s that the mufflers were placed in random places. Hopefully someone can correct me if im wrong, cos it might have meant the badges were. Very nice drum that I'd love to know how it sounds. I had to work quite hard to get mine dailed in, but then it's great. Mines the Krupa model I think.

Thanks for the info guys. I am going to try and find that info on the tone controls being shuffled around. There is a machine shop nearby I can take the strainer to and hopefully I can get that up and running. Not sure what I am going to do about the bubbling. Debating heating the wrap up and re-applying it myself to smooth it out but I may just call it mojo and move leave it. Other than that there is one screw missing from a butt end and 2 non original tension bolts which I have already tracked down on the bay.
