1940s Leedy / Ludwig & Ludwig kit

Loading...

I cant get my photos to upload to the thumbnail portion so i put them on photobucket with the links of the photos below.

I am the second owner of this set. The snare is a 1941 (stamped 4110 inside) Ludwig&Ludwig 7x14. The bass is a 1949 Leedy (inside is stamped) and is 14x22. Toms are 9x13 and 14x14 (no dates inside). The bass drum has the ORIGINAL calf skin head on resonant, and felt strip!!!!! The batter was original when i bought the kit but was complete shot!! The previous owner did add modern mounts on the bass drum, which i imagine will de-value it some.

I bought the set in 2001 for $600.00 from an 80 year old man who had them since he was young. They have not been restored, at all, and are in very good condition. The set came with cases, original bass pedal (photos match it to 1940s era ludwig- bass plate is broken), a ludwig speed king hi hat and bass pedal, original cow bells and wood block and two cymbal stands.

The story, if i remember right, is that the snare was part of a complete set that was lost in a fire. He then replaced the bass drum and toms in the late 40s. What i dont remember, is the history on the toms, as they don not have a Leedy or Ludwig badge on either. The toms both have "Brocksteins" 4211 Caroline St. Houston, TX. I live very close to Houston but this drum shop is no longer there..... could this be a re-rap on the toms??? ALso, I know ProMark is based in Houston. I wonder if this was another division (Herb Brockstein)????

Outstanding! I love that "butterscotch" tone to the wrap.

The toms present a bewildering mish-mash, or mismatch. Possibly MIJs?

The lugs on the 2 toms aren't Leedy or Ludwig; they appear to be Gretsch lugs in the pic, and the hoops, which aren't Leedy or Ludwig, appear to be Slingerland stick savers. The lugs and hoops are from the 50s. To further complicate the mix, the f/t leg brackets are Ludwig. The presence of vent holes where the badges (since removed) were, as well as the darker stain around the hole of the 9x13, is an indication of the wrap being original. Yet it appears to match the b/d wrap quite well.

Just curious how did you come to the dating of the 50's for the lugs and rims??

Ron, I'm well aware of when each of the components came to be timeline wise, first off we don't even know what these toms are yet? they look and are pieced together, the bass drum has modern spurs on it the floor tom has Ludwig modern floor tom mounts. I'm just saying your giving specific dates when you don't even have all the evidence yet? the lugs and rims could be from 50's to 80's

Well, yeah. The point was, they're not from the 40s, which is when the toms were said to have been acquired.

Thanks guys for the replies. I will post pics of the toms and inside of them as well. I am about to head to work but will take care of this tomorrow morning and post them. I have the original bass drum mount for the Leedy. It's the kind that mount onto the bottom rim. Inside of the bass is painted white and has "4902" stamped; which I hear means Feb. 1949. The snare interior is white and is stamped in this same fashion 4110.

One of these days I hope to find a 16x16 floor to match the kit.... we shall see!

Thanks, Justin

I took some photos of the 13" tom. I got to looking at the mounting bracket on the side, and it says Made in Japan. Not sure if just the bracket or the whole drum is made in japan. The rack tom fits on the bass drum mount perfectly. The floor tom is identical to the rack tom. The rims do appear to be the "stick savers". Also, the shells are thin, compared to other drums that i have seen. Anyhow, here are the photos. Thanks guys!
