1938 radio king snare opinion

Loading...

Hey

I just found this radio king snare online at Guitar center for 300 bucks. It is missing a few lugs and the tension rods. I'm having it free shipped to a local store,( I can return it, which is whats good about GC.) This is the only pic I have.. I'm going to call and get more pics, Provided everything else is original and the bearing edge is good. DO you think it's worth 300.oo.. I have no idea how I'm going to find the right lugs for this..total impulse buy..

Thanks

Rich

i'd try to pay a little bit less, more in the $200.00 price range. the clam shell looks all there, it might be a single ply, which would be great, but the lugs are going to cost you. hoplefully that will be all you need.

i am not sure on the wrap, i have never seen that before.

Yes I hope the wrap is original and the shell in decent shape. The hardware looks like nickel over brass, right? I should have more pics soon.

The finish looks like a marble lacquer but I have never seen one in that color. Usually it is a white/cream color with brown or green mixed in.

Those beavertail lugs pop up on feeBay from time-to-time...not too uncommon. I believe there is a batch of them on there now.

The finish looks like someone did a custom fade job over the possibly original marble wrap. I may be wrong about that, though.

And definitely see if you can talk them down. They usually have what I've heard them call a "hard price" or something similar that they can't go below without high-level management approval, but it's usually a bit lower than the marked price.

its mighty pretty thats for sure!

I agree though, $200 is more inline considering the missing bits n bobs.

It seems like you're getting an expensive project, needing lugs, rods, & ( with a non original finish, even though it is very attractive). Is the strainer system working ? Have you asked whether it is solid or ply? Are the hoops stamped w/ Radio King ? (in the end you will have a nice snare, but at an ever so slightly high market price).

I agree, it may not be worth it. It al depends on what is under the hood. I'm going to call the California store as soon as they open and see if they will cut a deal.. wish me luck,,

The Slingerland Book , & other references have the clamshell strainer as being introduced in 1940. How did GC date this to 1938 ? (may just be a minor point).
