14''x14'' Blue Oyster pearl Floor Tom?

Not only were the 70's Blue Oyster Pearls more beautiful, they were much better drums, - better craftsmanship & bearing edges, maple interior w/ reinforcement hoops.

Thanks guys. We were actually going to go up to 800.Hmmmm

Once he gets it, I'm sure he will do me the favor of setting up his whole kit for me to take pictures of.Yes Sir

Next on the list, not for a while though, is a snare with the wrap or re-wrap and if I ever come across a 10'' flying tom, big ticket item will be replacing his marimba he sold in the mid 80's to pay for food for his family. (us)

That bidding thing was an adrenaline rush, never felt so nervous about a bid before.:D

Not sure if we should tell him in the morning so he has something to look forward to, or wait for it to arrive? Any thoughts?

If I were you, wait until it arrives...I think that would give him the same adrenaline rush as you got when you placed the bid...

My 2 cents though...

Cheers

I sure hope he lets you get some good pics of the whole kit. I know I'd love to see it. I'm sure I'm not the only one on the forum that would either.

My :2Cents:: it would be much more of a pleasure (bonding moment) for you all, if you can actually hand him the drum...or let him open a box with the drum in it. As a father, there's nothing like seeing your children's eyes light up when you get them something special. There's also nothing like turning that around, as a son, and seeing your father's eyes light up like a kid on Christmas morning when you get him something that means a lot to him and it's totally unexpected.

Could you sneek it in the house and place it in with the kit? See how long it takes for him to notice it. Well then you might not get to be there when he does, nevermind, hand it to him.

Best son's of the year award.

Best lucky dad of the year award.

This is a GREAT idea! It would not be easy to pull off, but maybe the two of you could go over and one of you distract him while the other sneaks it in (I'm sure you've snuck something past him before Yes Sir). Then say, "Hey, Dad, I've got to take some pictures of your drums to share with the VDF community, why don't you come help us get some cool shots?" Then he should notice it immediately, and the three of you share a truly great moment together.

I'm so excited for you and I'm not even in on this, other than sharing my :2Cents:! Keep us posted on how it goes.

Well, we decided to tell him since my brother was home this morning.

I said that drum went for 500$ Then I asked about a minor hardware issue that wasn't original, I asked do you have those parts? He said yea only about 30-40 of them. I said well you better start cleaning them up.... that's your drum!

First he shrugged it off thinking it was a joke then he went down stairs. Came up 5 mins later... I said seriously... whats this say. (it was my account with the winning bid and already payed)

I've seen him happy before, but he was like a dang 5 year old at christmas.

His response. SERIOUSLY? YOUR KIDDING RIGHT? SERIOUSLY? HOW? REALLY?

Then once it sank in... he started to choke up and fight tears.:D

I said now you know this is fathers day + birthday this year from both of us, so don't forget when those times come. He screwed up and said it could be for fathers day and his birthday for 10 years.x-mas3 (I won't hold him to that)

He also agreed to set up his whole kit when it comes so I can take pictures to post.

His first response was, I'm using that my next gig in a few weeks for sure!Mallet Player2

I asked him a few days prior... if he had all the spare cash he needed, how much would he go on it... he said whatever it took.

Can't wait to see it come, he won't stop talking about it.

Thanks for all the help with my questions!

By the way, this forum is great, I have learned more about drums in the past few days then I knew from 26years.

It brings me closer to him with a subject he really enjoys and I can start to understand and talk about it more. Also If I wanna surprise him again, I know who to ask!

I tried taking up the drums when I was about 17... 9 years ago, and it didn't last long, I got frustrated because I knew how long it would take to get anywhere near as good as my dad, been thinking about giving it a go again, I've mentioned it and I think hes waiting for me and my own terms, so he wont pressure me.

But for some reason for the past 9 years I always try to count out the beats when I'm listening to the radio, never told him that, but I'm sure it will probably help if I decide to give her a go again.
