Default Aluminum Supraphonic with a Seam?

Hello Ludwig gurus,
I have a very clean pre serial Supra that appears to be a rare transition drum. The Super Ludwigs had brass shells with a seam and then the Supraphonics were established with the seamless spun aluminum shells. I have a Supra with COB hoops, red felt muffler, crimped snare beds, pre serial badge and an aluminum shell WITH A SEAM. Iíve done the test where you scrape a lug hole (no brass) and recently bought a pre serial Super Ludwig to compare the two. Itís obvious by the difference in weight, sound and response that the Supra is an aluminum shell.

Does anyone else out there know of any other Supras with aluminum shells that have seams? Does this make my drum rare?

Any input would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

-Tim

Hi Tim!

I'm also interested to find out more about the shell on your Supra! I'm sure there will be some knowledgeable replies soon!

Tim

How about the bearing edges. Are they identical to your COB model where the edge ends...turning in towards the inside of the shell or not? Thanks..

Thanks, Mike! The edges don’t turn in like the COB. That is the only obvious indicator (besides weight and sound) that the shell is aluminum.
Thanks again!

Mike helped me determine that the ďseamĒ on my drum wasnít a seam after all. Some Ludwig snares have lines that may appear to be seams, but are superficial marks (after further investigation, I saw that my snare in question actually had two of these). I took my Super Ludwig (cob shell with a seam) and took off the heads and was able to compare the aluminum drum with the cob. This is what helped make the final call. Thanks, Mike!
