Kent Snare Drum

Hi folks - Here's a project snare I just finished. It was originally a 5" X 14", but a crack formed around the top, inner edge of the innermost ply, leaving about a 3/8" section of the shell with only one ply to bear the tension of the head. I cut the shell down on both sides to keep the lug spacing even (from top to bottom), then re-cut new 45 degree bearing edges. After a little hand sanding, I reassembled the drum and here are the results. It was too late to play it properly and see how it sounds, but I'll be doing that first thing tomorrow morning.

Thanks BeBop! The tension rods are now too long to get the heads to the proper tension, so I've ordered shorter ones. When I get them, I'll tune it up and see what it has to say. I also made some spacers for the lugs as I noticed that the shorter distance between lug and hoop caused the lugs to splay outward too far.

I've actually been meaning to make some gaskets/spacers
as well..But I've been too busy fixing up a 1967 Kent BDP
kit..

Cool - Can't wait to see the kit when it's done. Be sure to post some pictures here please.

For spacers/gaskets, I had an old pair of leather motorcycle chaps kicking around that I haven't used in years. I cut up some strips, poked some holes and voila! Worked like a charm.

That's a great way to reuse material. Very creative.
