Re: Downbeat vs clubdate

Whoa, boys! Check out the bidding war on the ebay Champagne Sparkle "Club Date" kit - the one that Jaghog first mentioned to us. 6 bidders have run the price tag up to $1500 in 3 days, with 3 more...

Re: Gorgeous Kent drum kit (shell pack) on ebay

Re: amosguy's comment about the diamond-shaped mounting plate on the tom, a look through Dennis J. Brown's "History of the Kent Drum Company" shows that Kent used several different tom mounts,...

Gorgeous Kent drum kit (shell pack) on ebay

If anyone is interested in Kent kits, there is a gorgeous one on ebay. Nicest I've ever seen. Brought back memories, as my first kit looked like these - same black diamond pearl with blue labels -...

Re: Downbeat vs clubdate

Gorgeous Red Sparkle "Club Date" on Reverb this morning, with a "dig deep" asking price. If I was still accumulating vintage drums and had the room to store it, I'd be tempted to bargain for this...

Re: Help identifying Ludwig hi-hat stand

That's great, thanks K.O. I had never seen an 1123-1 with the late 1970s-early 1980s(?) black plastic handles. Rob Cook's Ludwig book mentions that they had breakage problems with those plastic...

Re: Help identifying Ludwig hi-hat stand

That's an 1123-1 that is missing the clutch. Rob Cook's Ludwig book states that it was used from 1966-1982. I'm not sure they were used that late (1982). Perhaps they were, but the 1124 Atlas stand...

Re: I'll break the ice: Rob Cook's Rogers book

Great insights, O-Lugs! Taking the reso heads off drums in the '70s, which inevitably damaged the bearing edges, and applying duct tape to batter heads, I cringe when I think of it. Back then, I...

Re: I'll break the ice: Rob Cook's Rogers book

OK thanks Leedy, that's simple enough. Certainly not a revelation in my mind. All well-built drums should incorporate the "floating head" principle by the fact that they are well built: the shells...

Re: I'll break the ice: Rob Cook's Rogers book

Say Leedybdp (or anyone else who can answer this question), the Rogers book (page 117) mentions that "Leedy developed the floating head principle. We took the floating head principle and made...

Re: Scarf or no scarf

Thanks, K.O., I appreciate (we appreciate) your chiming in on this discussion - and the other thread on Ludwig's change to lug positioning on the shells. Interesting stuff - I continue to learn from...

Re: I'll break the ice: Rob Cook's Rogers book

Two gorgeous kits, Mark and Leedybdp! The '60s are my favorite era for drums, warts and all! Purely for sentimental/nostalgic reasons, of course.

Although I would've loved to have Mark's classic...

I'll break the ice: Rob Cook's Rogers book

Merry Christmas to the VDF gang! (Or Happy Holidays, if you prefer). I'll break the ice: the icy silence we've had on the forum for a couple days, by plugging Rob Cook's book on Rogers drums.
...

Ludwig's change to lug positioning, 1968?

Hi guys,

My apologies for inadvertently hijacking Jaghog's thread on Ludwig scarf joints, with a discussion of Ludwig's change in lug positioning in approximately 1968. So, I'll start a thread...

Re: Scarf or no scarf

Bill Ludwig Sr. left his office for the last time on July 7, 1973 and died sometime later that same year. (from Bill Jr's autobiography) But I don't know when Bill Sr. stepped back and let Bill Jr....

Re: Scarf or no scarf

Interesting minutia discussion. I checked my no-date stamp 1966 "Hollywood" kit and my date-stamped Dec 31, 1968 "Hollywood" kit. Both have the wrap in the scarf joint, as expected.

Re: Real minty

Well, I don't like champagne at all, but I LOVE Champagne Sparkle! And if one is good, two are better! My two "Hollywoods" are not perfect, but they are nice born-togethers. (Both snares were...

Re: Ringo's cymbals in new Get Back documentary

Harking back to the off-topic discussion of the plastic number labels on Ringo's drums that were perhaps inventory numbers of some kind, I have asked Gary Astridge if he has asked Ringo about these,...

Re: More boom on a 20" bass drum?

Good eyes, Dan! I dunno when Ludwig started putting the larger lugs on the smaller toms, but my date-stamped Dec 31, 1968 Hollywood kit has the small lugs on the 8X12.

And LOL on the "I buried...

Re: Rogers Drum Parts Evolution

Actually, for what it's worth, the Rogers tom mount adaptations on Ringo's kits were done by Drum City, the London importer/distributor for Ludwig. Dave Golding, a Drum City employee, did the mod on...

Re: 1966 Rogers Silver Sparkle Drums

OK, thanks for that, leedybdp.....So, another dumb question: Why were Rogers drums heavy? More plies than other manufacturers, or heavier/denser wood? Thanks...then I'll stop asking about stuff...

Re: Ringo's cymbals in new Get Back documentary

The little blue things below the keystone badges are indeed the 1960s Dymo Labelmaker adhesive tapes.

Gary Astridge mentioned that they were inventory numbers, but looking at them, they have 3...

Re: 1966 Rogers Silver Sparkle Drums

Really cool set in a classic wrap, and if I wasn't downsizing my own kits (haven't got the room) I'd be interested. I think the first double-tom kit I ever saw was Dave Clark's, and I thought that...

Re: Ringo's cymbals in new Get Back documentary

Last night, on Part 2 of "Get Back," we got a good glimpse of the stamped ink marking on that cymbal in question. It is (sideways) Medium Ride.

I'm one of the few members of the Facebook Resistance - I refuse to join....so I cannot see the photos or text. However, I'd refer to Rob Cook's book. A transition badge Super Ludwig should have...
