Weird lug mounts on Ludwig Standard Last viewed: 1 day ago

Now this is a new one! Well to me at least. I can't see any way that this is factory. This old chrome Ludwig Standard Snare is my next drum up to clean and get singing again and seemed pretty straight forward until I opened it up and saw the lugs attached with this weird as Ikea style nuts attached to the outside of the threading in grooves.

Speed nuts, often used to hold trim pieces on older cars. Those are factory. Apparently a cost saving feature since it allowed them to use the lug designed for wood shells without the need for cup washers.

I've heard that the lug bosses are threaded so you could get cup washers and use standard bolts to put them back on.

I've had three of the metal standards. My chrome model has the conventional style I believe. The other two had what you have there. I went to remove one when detailing the drum and it didn't want to tighten back properly. So I decided not to remove the lugs on that one for detailing, just to be on the safe side. Nice find there. Great drums.

It is crazy that 1 little half turn totally loosens or tightens the lug to the shell.
