Vintage Heyn/Duplex Bass Pedal and Low Boy Last viewed: 1 day ago

I was visiting a fellow drummer in the area over the weekend and he pointed to an old trunk that he said held some old equipment. I was intrigued and asked him to pull it out. We had a good time getting dirty and sorting through the various pieces of drum hardware. I ended up with the following two items:

Bass Pedal:

Foot board is marked "Heyn Pedal mfg'd by Duplex Mfg. Co. St. Louis, MO." I gather from what little info I could find that Duplex purchased Heyn's design or the company and started producing it sometime in the teens or twenties.

The upright mechanism is not marked and appears more like a Ludwig or Ludwig imitation. It is missing a linkage to connect to the foot board, but I am sure I can rig something up.

The cymbal clanger was in there, too. There are no markings on it either.

The beater is unmarked and worn, but fits.

Low Boy:

This is unmarked, but appears to be a W&A style design. The eye bolt at the top of the spring mechanism is missing, so the pedal does not currently link to it. Again, I can rig something up.

These look like they would be right at home with a late 20s Ludwig bass drum that I have.

Hardware of this vintage is certainly not my expertise. Any information that you can provide to correct or enhance my tentative identification listed above would be welcomed.

Rick

There was also a very cool double pedal in the trunk. I took a cell phone pic at the time, but it is the same as this one in David Anfuso's collection, but is missing the beaters.

Rick, those are really something. Very innovative company for its time. Every now and then I'll drive by the old duplex plant. It was more of a little shop in the back of a large house on Henrietta street just south of downtown St. Louis.
