Update on my Blue Oyster Pearl "Ringo-ish" Kit

Loading...

Thought I would update since I have finally completed this kit and moved it to my sons room. Well.. it's not "completed" but it is complete enough to play.

Originally I purchased JUST the bass and toms and have been piecing it together from ebay and CL since that time.

I scored one correct flat base cymbal stand, but the other one isn't. I am watching 3 on ebay now and will swap it out once I get another one for a decent price.

Got a vintage Spur-lok hi hat stand but NOT the right flat base model. Still looking for one but they show up pretty rarely on ebay and usually come with a silly buy it now price.

Got the correct Speed King pedal. But that is pretty easy to do.

Picked up 20" and 18" Zildjian A rides. The 20" has slight keyholing so I saved a bit there. The Hi hat cymbals are K's just because I got a good deal. I like the sound of them but may swap them out one day. Not really sure.

Got the right snare stand. As you can see the snare is just all wrong. I have now purchased no less than 4 snares in my quest to complete this kit.

First I bought a vintage "ludwig" snare off ebay and when it arrived it was a piece of plywood with ludwig casings. Fortunately it was a reputable store and they happily refunded my money.

Then I bought the Standard you see here. It is in fantastic shape and sounds great too. Sadly the color is just awful with this kit.

I have right now sitting in my living room a 67 Silver Sparkle Jazz Fest in need of a cleaning, a new upper hoop, and a throw off. I have the the throw off sitting right next to it.... This would have suited me just fine but guess what happened next?

Someone put a 1964 Blue Oyster Pearl Jazz festival on ebay with no minimum bid and no reserve. ARGH!!! I had no choice... did I ? Yeah I bought it and it's on the way. I still haven't told my wife. She is going to kill me. Anyway here is the kit in it's current state.

Yeah. it gets in your head. I was going to live with my silver sparkle snare when I restored it but when the BOP snare went up on ebay and it is the ONLY one I have seen without a ridiculous "buy it now" price since I have been watching (almost a month now) I knew I had to buy it. To make matters worse it has a serial # that is reasonably close to the serial # on the toms. It just HAD to be added to my kit.

Hopefully I can clean up the silver sparkle and sell it for s little profit to offset the cost of the BOP jazz fest somewhat.

On the other hand I now feel MUCH better about the kit as a whole just knowing the snare matches correctly. Of course now it is just going to inspire me to pick up some of the missing period parts. I am so close now it seems like I have to make the whole kit "right"

It's an insidious disease for sure.

At least I am playing a lot more since it so fun to play this thing. Both my boys are playing a lot more too. For that reason alone it's worth it.

Oh and I can virtually guarantee that one of these days I am going to buy a BOP bass drum JUST for the hoops. That is another thing that is beginning to eat away at me.
