this weeks rehab drum-another leedy Last viewed: 18 hours ago

well, I've been needing a leedy utility strainer for my early 20's leedy engraved snare. ran across this leedy on ebay with a nice buy it now. immediately spotted the strainer I needed. drum looked rough. had been painted, twice. figured it would make a good donor drum. also had the fillister head tension rods that I needed for the snare side on mine. sounds like a plan,right.. went to use the rods, too large. wouldn't even go through my hoop. then I got to looking at the drum. totally complete, no damage, completely playable. you guessed it. time for another rehab....

i'll let the leedy guys identify it,if you'd be so kind. I thought the inverted bead, slotted tension rods and the strainer might put it early 20's? really not sure. hoops and clips are steel. has the original wires as well. has a radio king calf head batter and an old 60's Ludwig parade snare side head. its a 5x14 one piece shell and is very light. took a while to get it cleaned up. shell has no damage or dents really to speak of. shell was in better shape than I expected. probably scuffed it a bit before they painted it. not sure what the paint was, but not even acetone would put it dent in it. it had been on there a while. shell finish really looks nicer than what the pic shows. its a neat drum, I think.

so...still looking for the tension rods and utitlity strainer for the other leedy! the pic with the paint is from the ebay sellers auction. calf head had an inscription on the underside that I took a pic of as well.

bonus..drum came with a neat trap case, period sticks, brushes, some Ludwig & Ludwig mallets and a slotted drum key.

Mike, You commented on how light it is. Is it possible that it's an early aluminum shell? 30's maybe? Excellent rehab first class.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

thanks john..no idea yet. still researching. inside looks like it could be aluminum. has a seam though. I found a pic of one like it on another site. still gotta do some digging. 6 lugger, forgot to mention. has two holes that appear to be factory. other site mentioned for a heater. has same holes as the other one I mentioned.

here is the key granto. tell me anything about it? works like a charm.

Mike,

Does the key have Leedy engraved on it? For the most part, Leedy always engraved or stamped their keys with their name...However, there are exceptions to this rule...If it is stamped, the key is worth quite a bit...I've seen them go as high as $150 in auction on ebay...Of course, that is most likely a collector bidding...;) If it isn't, then it could be worth a little less to a collector...That is the correct style key for the older Leedy slotted rods...It should fit perfect in the slot...

Sometimes, people like to use Robertson screwdrivers and such to adjust the tension on drums with slotted rods...Needless to say that we all know what happens over time to the heads of the rods when the proper key isn't used...

Definitely a nice score, Mike...Congrats!! I would keep everything together...

Cheers

nope, nothing stamped on mine. I have seen the leedy stamped ones. they are very nice. as you suggested, I had planned on putting all this stuff back together properly in the trap case after cleaning. just feels right. been playing one set of the sticks that are superb! taking it easy on them though..

I have 2 snares I bought to cannibalize for parts but ended up restoring them because they were just too nice. One turned out to be my favorite "player".

glad to hear that its not just me that it happens too! I just hate to disable a perfectly complete playable drum to get another one going. in fact, looks like ive found a utility strainer for my engraved leedy after all.

Yep. I'm hitting that point with a "parts set" of Gretsch I picked up. Never gonna be a showpiece, but too useful to tear apart......

Hey mike,

I got the same snare drum. I found mine in a pawn shop. It has the tube lugs, steel hoops/clip, silk snare wires, utility strainer, it has the same 2 vent holes and inverted bead. There seems to be a seam on the inside, does yours have that? Mine has the initials bb followed by 23430 and underneath it 26/1/17. I have had a look around online and it seems to be a utility snare. These were made from brass and nickel plated. It could be wrong 2.
