Slingerland Radio King Tom. What have I got? Last viewed: 21 hours ago

From vibes

yeah Glen. I haven't done anything at all. I am in no hurry. I may just give it a careful wipe down, Clean the hardware and display it for now. It would look great in one of those theme restraunts. But it will end up on a display shelf in my home like you said. I feel it is a piece of drum history and will treat it accordingly. Just wish I knew the history of that drum and who and where it was played. Bet it has some tales left untold.

OK your killing me!!! Chappy50 asked you if you wanted to sale it, send that member a Pm or seriously put it on ebay! this drum to me would be an easy fix!, the hardware is easy to clean, the repair work is easy to do, and that drum will be still be a drum and a great sounding drum after we are all dirt napping!

Just some gentle rust removal and careful cleaning will do that puppy a world of good, along with some careful ring separation repair if needed.

It would look much better, and still be an unmodified piece of history.

There's a lot of cats around here up to the task.

Took it all apart. This is a great drum. Gave it a bath. Basically a very mild soap rub down with a cloth, then wiped down with wet cloth. Cleaned the hardware. Everything is just absolutely great except the Lacquer is flakeing.

I am leaving it alone. Like a old strat that looks like it has been through a lot.

One small problem, I had a couple of brand new remo ambassador 12" heads left over from another project and there just a couple centimeters to small.

Not going to work. Uhhhh , I was all ready to tune it up and play a little.

Any ideas anyone? The hoops fit the drum heads perfectly, just barely to small to fit over the shell. The skin heads were pretty tight too when I took them off.

With old Rk's there are different degrees of fit??? I'll get back to this statment later. do you have a 13" head just use it to see how much the head is out of round, it is from the calf heads you removed, the flesh hoops begin to act like a vise on the shell over the years and pulls the shells out of round, in fact you can look at the flesh hoops of those calf skin heads and see where they pulled the drum shell to, Now drum heads, how hard did you try to get the 12" remo head on? also a Evans may work the head bead is a little rounder, if you've got one? Now remo will custom make oversized heads but they only do it two times a year, so you have a six month wait at the longest. Aquarian makes the American Vintage series heads, which are oversized for older out of round drums, here is the link to them. http://www.aquariandrumheads.com/products/vintage-series

Thanks Vintage,

I believe the drum is in round. really close. I carefully and evenly tried to tension the head down over the shell hopeing the head would pull down to fit. no go. It might be a hair off. Like you suggest, I just need to try some differnt heads. Also after further research I have nailed this drum down to be a 1936-39 Radio King becuse of the type script on the rims.

If the old heads squezed the shells you would think new heads would fit.

But I also noticed the batter head was pulled down more. like the skin had given more aroung the wire hoop. not the rim. so there was less space between the rim and head. There was a little more space between the rim and resonant head. of course age and if it was performed on .

From Slingerland History site.

"1936-39: The Radio King line of drums first appeared in the 1936 catalog. These drums had the distinctive “Slingerland Radio King” stamped in the metal hoops. On very early Radio King drums, the words were actually engraved into the top rims " Just like this one. The script on the rims of this drum are exactly like the the ones in the pic.

Amazing this drum is or close to 75 years old. Nickel doesn't shine up like chrome but those little clam shell lugs are built so good. springs, tension rod inserts.

I will try some different head sizes and see what happens.

Maybe I can get away with this little vintage set up. I think this drum should have one more performance. I will take this set up out one night for a jazz performance.
