Back in the day, when I knew everything about drums, I kept my bass drum about 3/4 full of wadded up newspaper to muffle it. Now that I'm a follower of this site I've come to realize (or accept) that I really knew preciously little. Anyway, I recently removed the newspapers and properly muffled with felt stips (both fore and aft) Much better!
