Ludwig hardware 65 but shell 68?? Help identify! Last viewed: 1 day ago

Picked up this snare off clist. Based on serial number of 185271, baseball bat muffler with white felt, 8 nickle lugs and nickle rims I guessed it as a 1965 Jazz Festival. But the drum had been painted, so when I stripped off the paint (no wrap underneath) I was surprised to find what appears to be maple exterior. Interior had been painted as well, I sanded a spot to find maple interior (I think). Badge was on super tight, appeared factory installed. First time on here - attempted to add 2 photos from my google acct. Any help identifying is appreciated - thanks!

Ludwig used maple exteriors on their drums that were to be painted, in most cases. your assessment of it being a 65 drum is right on target. inside should have been painted white during that period. maple or mahogany on the interior ply is appropriate for that time period. what color was the outside?

Hey Mike, Thanks so much for that info - I had never heard of the maple exterior/interior used for Ludwig painted drums - cool! The original exterior of the drum was painted over red by a previous owner. He even painted over the badge! The interior had one coat of hurriedly painted bright white, but under that was a yellowy/cream color. When I started peeling away the red I didn't see any other color underneath. There were patches of a dark gray that didn't come entirely off with the red but it didn't cover the entire drum, strange. Below are two photos of pre sanding. I own two duco painted 60's Ludwig snares but they are both 6 lug. Any idea what colors Ludwig painted these 8 lug models? Thanks again!

that one has a great looking outer ply on it. some are not so pretty!

Ludwig would paint in any color that a customer wanted. common were two tones such as black/gold and blue/silver. ive got a sold blue duco that's a custom color. I also had a solid green. have one in blue and silver as well. ive also got a solid black duco kit.

Thanks again for the info Mike - a big help. I thought the exterior maple looked good too - thinking about just applying some beeswax to let the wood grain show and repainting the interior that Benjamin Morris white.

I currently have a 66 blue/silver duco for sale on ebay, link below for pics. I have a 63 blue/silver duco I gig with and people love that old wood sound.

Any pics of those snares or that black duco kit?

forgot about the pre serial auditorium snare. I would guess this one was a custom color. maybe a school color.

thanks dave. yes it is a 12x15. i'm a big fan of them. the kit was a factory clubdate combo kit with no floor tom. someone had started the conversion on the 15 it so I finished it up. I now have a 14x14 for the kit as well.
