Shelly Manne was such an important jazz player in his day, and yet the drums he endorsed did not do nearly as well as other competing brands. I find this surprising given how nice these sound coupled with his cymbal set, his skills and the skill of the rest of the band.
Can anyone detect if he is using a 20-inch or an 18-inch bass drum here? I notice that it is a 1962 film, and the bass has standard telescopic spurs, but not the type that extended from the center of the drum with a slight forward angle that I'm used to seeing on both Slingerland and Leedy drums. Might that be a sign it was a small bass drum?
