How Common Was It For Gretsch To Use Slingerland Tom Mounts?

Loading...

Ive seen some Stop Sign Badge Gretsch kits with Slingerland Set O Matic tom mounts installed and listed as "factory"...and even some Rogers hardware. Was this a common practice at all? Are these considered less desirable than drums with rail mounts or Gretsch double tom mounts? Im about to pick one up that has Slingerland stuff installed.

I love Slingerland hardware, so me this seems awesome. Do collectors whine about it in terms of "collectibility" though? I know the answer is probably yes, since it seems collectors whine about EVERYTHING...but just curious about this little pice of history. I just discovered that it seems to have happened here and there and I can't really find anything about it in the Gretsch book that I have.

Thanks for any and all insights, no offense to hardcore collectors. I'm just kidding around!

60's and 70's Gretsch were often found with Rogers hardware,it was the best at the time, although I doubt it was factory,I think drums were ordered sans hardware, and back in the day a lot of shops were set up to install hardware ordered from Rogers or whoever,it probably affects collector value, but not as drastically as xtra holes or a re wrap.Almost anything was better that Gretsch mounting systems,so I could see someone ordering a set undrilled and installing the set o matic.

Hey Adam,I have seen many Gretsch set's from the 70's with-out the Gretsch tom mount's..If the drummer went into a drum shop they could order a Gretsch set with-out mount's then they could have what ever mount's they wanted. As you know the Gretsch mount's were Crap. Also I have seen Roger's, Slingerland and Ludwig mount's on Gretsch set's..To me a 70's Gretsch set with-out Gretsch mount's would hold the same value...Mikey

Rad. Thanks for the help guys.

I actually dont have a lot of experience with Gretsch stuff so I didnt know that the mounts sucked. Makes sense though that someone would order their drums with Slingy or Rogers mounts though. I love em! Ludwig...can't say the same. But to each his own!

Thanks again for the help!

I own a Gretsch kit from the early 80's and declare unequivocally:

The hardware sucks.

As soon as I could, I changed everything to Yamaha. I understand that the purists would cry foul, but the kit was unplayable otherwise.
