I'll add another voice to the choir of waaaay too hard to pinpoint. With that said I love Art Blakey's Moanin...how could a drummer not?
Anything by Monk, but esp the early Blue note stuff. Those recordings have a quality that just can't be recaptured even with modern improvements in recording. Kind of like vintage drums.
I guess Round Midnight, and Moanin would be some of my favorite tunes...
ask me tomorrow, and I'll have a different answer. Or even an hour from now.

I truly believe his confidence was a major reason why he was such an amazing drummer. He was absolutely fearless behind the kit and NEVER hesitated or doubted. Whether it was a very complex groove or a string of amazing fills, he flat out never doubted himself. He just did it.

Guys, saw Roy Haynes a couple weeks ago from the second row at the Rialto in Atlanta. Such power from such a little guy. OK, a little guy with what had to be two left hands. His quartet had a wicked "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" adaptation. I'm still listening to it in my head.
