1960's ludwigs Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Hi-

Need some expert Ludwig opinions please! Here's what found on eBay:

Black Diamond Pearl 1960-1962?

14x20 bass - preserial transition badge. clear interior stamped 1960. Has single tom mount but no spurs? there are no holes in shell for spur mounts either. I really do not want to drill holes for spurs/mounts and plan on using a snare stand instead of the single tom mount for the 12".

16X18 floor tom - preserial badge. white interior - no date stamp. baseball bat w. red muffler

8x12 tom - preserial transition badge. clear interior stamped 1960. round dial muffler. diamond plate mount. small piece of masking tape on wrap

I believe the shells are 3-ply mahogany, all hardware is original from what I can tell and in good condition. Ludwig Playton Plastic and WeatherMaster heads...some of which are yellow and look like gut.

I'm in the process of cleaning them to gig on and cannot wait.

Pics attached. How much are these worth? Decent find? Feedback is welcome!

Thanks!

Mike

Mike...3ply Mahogany Ludwigs are hard to beat, especially in that nice BDP wrap. Looks like you need to find some parts for your rail consolette, & some clamp-on spurs. There are originals & repros out there. The general consensus is that trans-badge Luddies are tops. Clean 'em & play 'em. Calf-skin heads are a bonus....marko

Thanks Marko! I have the rail consolette and will check out the clamp-on spurs...

So, was it common for Ludwig to not have factory spurs in the early '60's? The front hoop on bass drum does have 2 little spikes with clamp.

Do they appear to be matching set?

What would value the drums at?

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike, post a pic of those spikes your speaking of, and yes it was a fairly common thing to have clamp on spurs up till that time! with the three drums you have the tom rash on the mounted tom,$450.00 or so.also are you sure the floor is not a 16x16"?

Is anybody else missing the red B/B muffler on the floor tom? I thought the red felt was only found in 64. and white painted interior was a later maple shell? Now, admittedly I am not an expert, but those seem to be outstanding to me.

Thanks again for the feedback. Yes, it's a 16x18 floor tom. Here is a pic of the spikes. There is no snare rash on the 12 - it was a piece of dried masking tape, which I removed (see pic).

Also have all original hardware.

What style are they - Classics? The size combo doesn't match any of the factory kits unless I'm missing something in the '60-'62 catalogs I've seen

Sounds like I may have overvalued them at $850...

$450 seems like a steal to me!:(

ok the spike thingy is a bass drum anchor it mounts on the front rim in the center, is the bass a12x22"? sorry I just read the part about the tape great I'm glad it's not tom rash. yeah that helps in the price alot.

14X20 bass drum

OK yeah it's not a catalog pictured size kit, either the dealer had it on the floor, or custom ordered, but probably back then a customer comes in the store he wants this particular size, if It wasn't on that kit they would pull off the drum from another kit and then reorder that size they had removed from it.

makes sense.Cool1 Not sure I understand the thinking back then only having the anchor on front bass hoop (with no legs) and no balance once tom is mounted...Although maybe they wanted to preserve the sound of the drum by not adding more holes...Any thoughts?
