I use a Stew Mac product for guitars called Preservation Polish. Super easy wipe on, wipe off liquid. Shine lasts for years. My son turned me onto it...

If you want to add another U joint you can slip a small length of neoprene or vinyl hose over the joint. This would help hold the joint from collapse....
