YAY!!! My Slingy Super Sound King Resto Project Completed!! (Pics)

Loading...

First, I want to thank the members who provided me with advice, information and certainly (Mikey) for those few really hard to find parts!

I feel like I rescued a dog from the pound...when I first received it, I wondered what I was smoking when I bought it off Ebay!Eye Ball

However, after countless hours, dismantling, cleaning/polishing, hunting for parts and info, I've FINALLY finished it...or as close as I can for the time being. I am happy with how it came out, certainly does not meet the standard of collectable condition, but definitely a nice looking drum and complete and period correct...large muffler knob, COS hoops, has the original bar connecting the two strainers, all original plastic bushings and the two original rollers at the bottom of each strainer.

In terms of cost, replaced top hoop ($38) and snare wire connector/large knob ($25), plus the original cost of the SSK ($150: $130for snare +$20 ship)

Here are the pictures of it now, in its "after" state...also, for reference, a few "before" pics in the next post:

Closeup of the bottom "workings" of each strainer, with my brand new PureSound snare wires. Also, have a (looks like) '90's period Slingerland snare side head (says "Made In Taiwan) YUK!, and an original Slingerland batter head:

Thanks, appreciate it! I actually have to update my list, as I got rid of a couple of snares - my Festival and 10-lug Aluminum. Of all my drums, those were my "least liked" and least collectable. Besides, my wife is giving me lots of s--t about all the snares and no place to keep/store them! I've got the SK I wanted, black and gold badge and now my SSK is useable and looks good (from about a foot away).

One drum I would like to add is a Luddy SS but, at this point, I think for peace in the household that will just have to be put on hold. I have been selling off some of the assorted parts I had in the closet...looking now to only keep completed snares.

Sorry for the long post! :(

Yeah,

Well don't get rid of too many.. you are one of the dudes that I have been using to justify my recent buying spree to my own "better half"

Cheers

John....that's funny, like I'm sitting here laughing!LoLoLoLo

I do think I'm going to have to make a choice at some point, the '59 Radio King is not for sale (Father's Day present) and is collector condition. Not crazy about the clamshell strainer, so not a useable a snare as my SK's or Rogers snares.

My Tama snares are rare, as Candy Apple Red was really only available for a few years and the snare was (I think) a special order color, similar to the tourquoise...hence, also not for sale...though I might consider selling one of them at some point. Both collector's condition and stored carefully in the closet.

Now that I'm selling off pieces, I am getting less flack from my wife...but she wants to see me sit down and play/practice instead of buying! D' Drummer

Makurtz, I have not seen any parts for SSK's since buying mine, except for an occasional COS/COB 10-lug hoop.

While I probably didn't notice any for sale because I wasn't thinking about buying one, there appear to be almost none for sale. There was one from a dealer a few months ago on Ebay, but it was missing pieces, had an extra hole and was a bit overpriced for its condition (my opinion)...though, since they are rare, not sure what a good one is worth! Other than this one, haven't seen any. Here is the link:

But, good luck on the hunt!

Sounds similar to whats happening here.. More playing please & less buying,

Why do you need another one? etc. but thats not a bad thing..

I'm not buying any more (unless I see something special).

Cheers
