Yardsale Score: LEEDY!

Loading...

Cool Dude1964 Leedy by Slingerland Duco blue/silver 5x14/8x12/16x16/14x22, with extra '61 blue sparkle ludwig snare (w/WFL classic throw-off) AZCO 14" hihats 18" Avedis crash/ride and 22" Avedis ride.

the kit came with a speedking with the ghost style beater (not shown) and the standard beater, the pedal has the rubber parts to protect the bass hoop, spur-lok hihat stand , a Slingerland cymbal stand, a camco "oaklawn" cymbal stand, and a very old or cheap leedy cymbalstand in nickle finnish (not pictured)

The floor tom legs are present and the spring brackets work and the bass has it's legs and consolette.

no bottom sticksaver hoops or front bass hoop, the bass mounted cymbal holder and bracket are long gone as well, the set did come with a ludwig "script" bass muffle and leather stick bag and the throne pictured.

The tom and floortom have no breather eyelets or badges they do have the "tone control" they are stamped oct 64 M inside (the 8x12 is stamped nov 62) and the snare is COB with the original snares.

the question is should I put wrap on it to "restore" it or repaint, or leave it alone, I do intend on getting the bass mount cymbal holder, the front hoop/claws/t-handles and some COB sticksavers for the bottoms, but should I really re-finish?

Since you asked...I would not touch that finish other than to clean it up a bit...that sort of thing. It's a Duco and as according to the mondo-guru's on this forum, it probably won't take a wrap well. It will most likely be too fat with a wrap. No, it's one that should be left painted. Nice. Very nice.

I agree that the duco should be kept "as is", with a good cleaning.

Advise taken, I will keep 'em as is. ( cleaning and finding original repalcment hoops, t-rods, claws L-rod cymbal holder, ect. goes with out saying)

I made a HUGE mistake when I was a teenager drilling and instaling 70's modular hardware on my 1963/64 silver sparkle Ludwig Clubdate 12/14/20. I always tell myself it does'nt matter cuz I'll never sell the set, and at the time I needed a gigable kit, but it still bothers me.

Where in California did you find that and wondering how much you got that for?

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I hear that! I've pretty much given up on yard sales! When I ask about drums they look at me like Im nuts. Yet still I see stories like this. I guess there's always a needle in a haystack.

Where in California did you find that and wondering how much you got that for?

I live in sacramento, I found the kit in Vallejo, we were visiting my girlfriend's parents during the weekend and I always find an excuse to look for old bikes and frames at yardsales around her parent's house (i work at a bikeshop) and had pretty much given up on finding any killer old roadbikes and my girlfreind said, "hey look honey, a drumset!"

I instantly assumed iwould look over and see a old sunlite or some taiwanese "firewood" set, and saw what i thoght was a ludwig duco, and it just kept getting better, first it's a Leedy, then it's got zildjians (at first I thought the zil-co azco was an original K) and extra ludwig snare with a WFL classic strainer.

so I ask "How much are you asking for the drumset?"

and I brace myself

"well it was originally $250 but we had some offers and now..."

(I could just hear the next words being something involving ebay and a lot more money.)

"... we were thinking somewhere around $200."

I told him I had to go see if I had the cash, leaving the kit sitting there was extremely hard.My girlfreind gave me $200 and said it was for my birthday.

I offered $150, he said "I better not go under $180."

I gave him $185.00

and I keep waiting for something bad to happen to me.

Very cool. If the Duco is pretty intact, leave it, indeed. There comes a point, of course, when it is so flaking and missing that it's a better alternative to rewrap.

Sanding Duco down and wrapping works, it's not like the adhesion will be bad or anything. BUT...the big issue on drums of those era often becomes that the Duco finished shells were just a tad wider in diameter than the wrapped ones. So, you wrap the former Duco-shell, and then go to put the heads on...and....dammit. D'OH !

So, leave 'em.

(also..yeah the modular mounts...hehehe....if there's any comfort in it...if I had a dime for every drum which comes thru here with a big, ugly, "strong" '70's-80's replacement mount obliterating the entire shell..I'd be on a beach in the tropics right now.....so, you certainly weren't the only one to have done that....)

Best sounding set I ever had was a Leedy from that era in that duco.

Those mahogany interior shells are (IMO) the best.

Clean 'em up and enjoy them...congrats on a great find.

The snare should be killer too.
